I receive PBO, Yachting Monthley and Yachting World and am fed up with having to empty the same inserts from them in to the bin every month! So, last month I cancelled my subscription to two magazines, and now that this month's trio have arrived (this and next months had already been paid for) I am glad that I did. OK, so it doesn't make a differnece to IPC or the environment, but I feel a bit better about it now........

end of rant,

Jo

More power to your elbow mate! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I did a similar thing with our postman back along, I got really fed up with all the crap he was shoving through the door, so for a while I waited for him to deliver the mail, and if there was any crap in it, I just used to follow him down the road and give it back to him!

I know the Post Office have a facility for you to opt out of recieving junk mail, but have you seen it? they don't exactly make it easy for you.

Perhaps it would be a bit of fun if every time folks got their magazines in the post, that they just sent the garbage back to the magazines head office, it would only cost a stamp, then maybe, just maybe, they would get the message?

Yeah, I know, it will never happen, we Brits just don't have the right temperament for doing that sort of thing, (unfortunately).

You have made a Faustian pact. In exchange for the convenience of getting magazines in the post, you have become a databased commodity to be bought and sold by IPC.

In the oft (mis)quoted words of Capt. Mainwaring:
'Don't tell 'em your name, Pike!'

In today's ever increasing world of technology, I await to see the electronic version of PBO, YM etc. I'm sure they can publish it as a pdf and then, for the monthly subscription fee (or free to forum users /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif), download it to our computers, at least that way you don't have the junk mail with it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Any takers, or has this idea already been binned previously?

Junk mail no............

spyware, adware etc? almost a certainty /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

you would be surprised at how many websites install tracking cookies and spyware on your systems, but then again, maybe you wouldn't?

Yes, you can get rid of them, but the question really is.......should they be there in the first place?

I guess the inserts are IPC's idea of adding more "content" to their magazines.

IPC charge the advertisers for their inclusions. It's not about giving a better product, it's about making more money.

I agree with a digital version of the magazines (if free /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ). I too cancelled my subscription. The magazine (P&O) was constantly increasing in price and also increasing in adverts and less valuable information.

Nowadays I stick to this forum … more helpful.

Sadly it is a fact of commercial life, inserts and ads keep the mags going. Cover price revenues only meet a fraction of the production and distribution costs. Surely those people who pay for those inserts must realise that we tip them straight into the bin. What a waste! The worst example of insert overkill in my experience is the Lifeboat, but they have a good excuse!

Good excuse, but they could save themselves a few quid by not putting them in. I'm sure that most boat owners are fully aware of the RNLI and offshore, afterall they send it through the post aswell - where they get the name & address from I don't know.

I usually only read mine in the hot tub, catching floating leaflets can be a right pain.

Just cancelled YM and (sorry IPC) about to stop PBO. None of them appear to look after their customers, just the advertisers and manufacturers.

Sailing Today is a breath of fresh air, they grab a bone and run with it, whereas, IPC is well, vanilla really.

I still have a few months left so I can stay on the forum for now.
