airmar sounder/log transducer fitting - ahead of the keel no location points directly 'down' so will it all work fine at an angle with some calibration or is it best to add a small welded 'box' to keep the transducer pointing at the seabed? If so, is this best protruding down from the hull or into the hull?

Wedge shaped wooden block on the outside to make the transducer head parallel to the waterline, recessed if necessary make the fitting flush. Sikaflex to hull and the whole lot is held in place by the locking ring inside, where you may well need another wedge to make it parallel with the outside.

Airmar make both through and in-hull transducers with a "tilt" built in to allow for the deadrise angle so have a look on their website if you haven't bought it already. Getting it absolutely vertical isn't critical obviously (or it would only ever work in flat calm) but it's good practice. Putting it an angle causes all sorts of problems but don't sweat on getting it accurate to a tenth of a degree. Just spirit level accuracy is plenty good enough.

I have it already without tilt. I was thinking of having the tilt welded to the boat with a wooden wedge on the inside. A wooden wedge on the outside doesn't sound good. I was wondering whether to make the lump outside or weld a recess inside to make the sensor point down. Writing this has made me realise there is only really one way to go and that's an outy with a wood wedge inside.

Thanks all, for your suggestions
