Inner forestay deck fitting

Hi All,

I’m hoping for some advice on fitting a deck attachment for an inner forestay on our Hallberg Rassy 36 (Zoe). I plan to mount the deck attachment in front of the anchor locker as there is a bulkhead under the existing stem fitting. Do you think I can simply screw through this and attach a wichard padeye with a backing plate or similar? Or will some form of tie down likely be required? I’ve marked up two potential locations - one on upstanding that would have a thickness of c.14cm and the other on the deck which would provide around 5cm. I’ve also included interior shots of the anchor well for any suggestions using the existing stem fitting bolts perhaps.

We’re planning to use a wichard lever to tension the forestay (being professionally rigged to the mast currently) and will use the forestay for a hanker in Genoa when wing in wing, plus storm jib.

I appreciate I’m not sharing all possible details - just looking for some initial thoughts at this stage and will likely seek professional help/advice once I have a rough idea of what’s required.

Thank you for any advice!
Justin

If the vectors work -ie align with the angle of the new stay closely enough- can you not fit a threaded eyebolt to the back of the stem band and to the bottom of the Wichard fitting and a -say-8mm dia rigging screw between the two ?
EDIT: I see this is concurrently covered in another thread though not using the stemband as the lower attachment point and backing plate!

I fitted a removable inner forestry to my HR352. You must not use the deck on your 36 to take the load. Get a good stainless welder to fabricate a fitting for you that will transmit the loads to the hull. I have a fitting visible above deck which bolts through to a bracket under the deck in the anchor locker. This bracket is welded to a web in turn welded to another bracket which bolts to the inside of the stainless bow plate fitted as standard to these boats. It sounds more complicated than it is. I’ve attached a couple of photos but it’s getting dark here and I would need to remove the gas bottles to get better photos. Let me know if you need more info. (PS Note the lack of a teak deck- I removed it over lockdown). EDE7B2A5-67F9-4D65-A112-56EEF51597B5.jpegE1FF027F-27D1-49E7-BF40-E5BBEAC906B0.jpeg

Different boat, but mine is fitted aft of the anchor locker which brings the storm canvas inboard and, being aft of the anchors locker rear bulkhead, is in a very stiff area of the deck.

.

I agree with Andy. On the IP the inner is connected to a deck eye and the backing plate to the eye is tied with stainless steel wire to the boats centre brace, which in turn is directly bonded to the hull. The loads on an inner could be very substantial especially in a knock down (heaven forbid) and you need to avoid any risk of tearing a hole in the deck which is imply not deisgned to take substantial loads.

Great advice as usual, thank you. We will follow the approach of PVB and are seeking options to fabricate the fitting now.

Note that the factory-fitted inner forestay attachment has no fixing to the deck at all. The stainless strap goes through the deck, and the gap is sealed with mastic. Therefore, there can be no load at all on the deck.

Yes, makes sense. I wonder if even better to fibre glass into the deck or better to use mastic?

There'll be minimal movement, so mastic would be fine. The one on my HR352 was sealed with mastic where it went through the teak deck, and a stainless plate was slipped over it to tidy it up. I never used the inner forestay in anger, but it was useful as a jackstay attachment!
