Inland speedo

Hi all,

I'm looking for something to tell my speed on rivers. I guess my car sat-nav will do the job, and at a popular price, however it is rather hard to read the speed section of the screen and I suspect it is going to tell me to "turn right" every time I am near a road!

Has anyone a recomendation for a practical and not too expencive upgrade from the sat-nav ?

not neccessarily.

for example the Thames above teddigton lock has a limit of 8km/h over the river bed, for which the satnav will be fine. Look at the satnav once and then engine revs will do - until you turn round then check the satnav again, the revs will be different up and down river.

But from Wandsworth bridge to teddington lock the speed is 8 knots through the water, for this you need a paddlewheel log or similar if you wish to stick to the rules.

I got one of these Garmin GPS72, cost about £80 off fleabay. Does the job creditably well and you can use it in conjuction with a map if you like walking.

Oh and if you drop it over the side, it floats and is waterproof too.

Takes AA batteries which last around 15 - 20 hours.

Other than that, don't some of the fishfinders have a speed function on them?

your rope will give you speed through the water better than a GPS.............
