I really like Hoorn, but this time our visit coincided with Lappendag [cloth fair] on 15th Aug. A fun fair in the streets, huge number of market stalls and ear splitting oompah, oompah thud thud thud music.
The main activity seemed to be blokes trying to neck as much beer as possible. The streets were solid, shoulder to shoulder, impossible to move, a bit like London tube trains in rush hour. Even getting to the urinals was too much trouble for many!
Everyone was having a good time but not my scene!
We anchored in the outer harbour but the music was still deafening.

The weed is always bad as you approach Hoorn. Draft is irrelevant, to a point, as the weed grows to just below the surface. It wraps you up so much reversing is called for to clear the fouling. A rope cutter is a useful thing to have. Not unusual to see a boat being hauled with sterngear problems. A shame - the Markermeer is dying, hence the experiments to rejuvenate the waters.
Yea the weed as become quite a problem , so I understand it was planted to help clean the water but it's just overgrown more then was expected .
A few days back a Dutch sailor went in to clear weed from his boat that stopped him moving and never resurfaced .

The havenmeester at Marker Wadden was explaining the formation of the island.
In great detail he said that the island was the spoil from a 40m deep pit that was dredged in the shallow water. The idea was to create a vortex which would cool the water and form a slight flow which would reduce weed growth.

"and is it working?"

"no, but the birds like it"

You don't have to leave your armchair to travel the inland waterways of the Netherlands, France and Germany. HQ live webcams 24/7.

Choose your barge - I like Strick., who's just offloaded at the Heineken factory and is now on his way. Sometimes like watching paint dry as they sit and wait, often quite absorbing/relaxing as they wend their way through towns & countryside.

This one's moving along at night but no sound, none of them seem to have sound? If there was at least a decent throb of large diesel it would be quite hypnotic webcam-binnenvaart.nl - cam-Anita

I agree with all this but after a couple of seasons cruising The Netherlands, we were irresistible drawn to the Baltic. Now that is beautiful cruising.!
I agree, but of course that takes more time and you can have quite a good Dutch holiday in three weeks or even less. I did once take a Sadler 29 round Fyn and back, which took five weeks, including two working our way back against near gales from Norderney, but that is probably about the limit for most people.

We went to the Baltic a number of times and each time I knew that the weather would force us into inland Netherlands during our return in August. My heart would sink at the prospect, only to find that I would actually enjoy the relaxation of pootling along and the many small pleasures on the way.
