injector replacement...a diy job ?

Hi Guys,

I am planning to change the injectors on my VP 2002 in 12 months time (and the saildrive membrane, and clean the exhaust elbow....so the list goes on...)

Is injector changing something that can be done with relative ease following the book of words? I am pretty mechanically minded but have never done this or seen it done before...

Volvo supply the injector units for about £125 each but want as much again to fit each one...

Shall I give it a go?

If this engine needs the injector extractor don't attempt it without one.

Others with more knowledge of diesels will no doubt be along later but a note of caution - be very carefull with the banjo unions which connect the pipework to the injectors. They are comparatively fragile and it is easy to break the seal between the union and pipe.

I think there is an injector extraction tool for sale on this forum at the moment.

But be careful. The VP200x series is a bit problematic in this area as there are copper sleeves between the cylinder-head and the injectors. If you remove the injectors, it may be that you dislocate the copper sleeve as well. In that case the head need to come off to replace the sleeve with a new one.
The sleeve is the only thing between the coolant and the injector, so if the sleeve is moved coolant will start leaking into the cylinder or somewhere else.

If you're planning to do it in a year's time, it would seem that your injectors are working. So why do you want to replace them? At most, they might need servicing, which would be much cheaper than fitting new ones.

The 2000 series engines can be tricky when it comes to injector removal. Unless the engine's running very roughly, I'd be tempted to leave well alone. The injectors in my 2003T haven't been touched for years.

See my advert in the For Sale forum. Using the correct tool makes the job fairly straight forward or there is a distinct chance that you will damage the sleeves. The injectors can be serviced at most Bosch injector service outlets. PM me if you need more help.

+1. I needed an engine survey on a 2003, and the engineer did not want to remove injectors for a compression test for that very reason. The sleeve can even fall into the pot.

I don't think it can! Although it is possible that part of the flare on the bottom of the sleeve could fall into the cylinder.

And make sure you have the head room to use it. Last time I needed one my local diesel injector refurbisher lent me his for a couple of hours on the assumption that he would be getting the refurb job.
I do tend to agree with the others - if they are performing ok and a hassle to get out I would leave well alone, just treat them and the pump to a nice new fuel filter on a regular basis and avoid the cheapo pattern ones.

Why do you need to remove them.
i had a car with 230k mls on the clock injectors original untouched

If they don't need sorting for 12month leave them till they do need done

Don't do it without the tool and even then ensure you drain the collant first

The tool is soft so be careful with it

Service exchange is only worth it if you need to do them in a hurry better to get your own refurbished

Rubbish, the sleeve has a narrow end which fits into hole in the head.
