One of my VP ignition switches has lots the spring / feedback when turning fully clockwise to engage the starter motor. Is there a fix for this or do I need to buy a new part? (Looks like it's 3587072 formally 864277 but I'm not sure of this as some of the starter switches seem to have a glow plug setting but I don't believe mine does).

Bit of finger trouble there, deleted my own message, yes what Simon said, keypart are cheaper than Volvo by quite a bit and it's the same part.
Brace yourself though as if one's gone the other probably won't be far behind.

Take the switch off (easy) and drench it with some spray lube stuff suitable on electrics - may help.(this is probably something should be done every few years but do we think of it ? )
New switch quite expensive - even the VP guy apologised when I replace d one once to fix a fault ......................and it didn't fix the fault !

Would a car/lorry switch do as a replacement?
The MD11c has no glow plugs so it's only a simple switch, not worth £75.88inc. or even £68.29 inc. from Keypart.

arguably yes it would, but you would need to go through the wiring diagram and find a suitable equivalent, modify the wiring, mounting etc. Regular classic car type switch @ £20 plus a stop switch plus wiring, crimps, connectors, make a bezel adaptor to look a reasonable job and quite a bit of time etc. You will probably end up spending £35 on bits, and almost certainly need a drill bit or tool or something similar etc.
Chances are a replacement volvo switch will last 15 -20 years and fit straight in.

You can buy them new from vehicle electrical suppliers at much less than OE components and you can get various stages with them so you don't have the glow plug setting.

Try these PeteM, much cheaper than VP parts although there is VAT and postage to pay.

I'd like to stick with a genuine VP part but thanks anyway (partly because I'm fussy but also to ensure that it locks into place to prevent the barrel from rotating) . Although it does feel like one of those parts that VP give a marine serial number too and increase the price by 300%.

Incidentally, I would be wary of buying a lorry part as it would probably rust and seize very quickly. A better bet would be a quad bike ignition switch that would at least have some weather resistance. A quick search for "quad bike waterproof ignition switch" gives some similar looking units that an might be of interest to an enterprising forumite trying to save some money.

Anyhow, I think I might buy two and be done with it and sell the two old ones (one working fine) on eBay to recover a little cash.
