Infra Red Thermometer

I'd like to buy an infra-red pyrometer (thermometer) in a range covering the normal engine and bearing temperatures on a yacht. I've seen quite a few expensive ones that are cased to withstand daily use by a professional but I only want to use mine on my own boat occasionally. Does anyone know where I might buy one - maybe secondhand?

Is £70 too much?

If not, look at the Raytek MT4 <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.contral.co.uk/erol.html>here</A>.

I bought a small infrared thermometer from ETI Ltd (http://www.etiltd.co.uk/) about six months ago. It was their "Tiny" model and cost about £27. The only limitation is that it does not have a sighting beam so you need to get close to the target to be sure that you are measuring what you want. I have found it very useful diagnosing an overheating problem.

Thanks Dave and everyone - I am specially interested in the ETI if it comes in at £27 though the website doesn't give prices - I'll ask them. The small Raytek looks very nice but is £82.13 including VAT.

I've been watching that Ebay auction - I have bought and sold a lot through Ebay in the last year but two really bad buys (Ipod and Ipod accessory) wiped out all the savings I'd made so I am very wary now! He's going to get at least £50 for that from the look of it and I'd rather pay £82 and have a new calibrated product with the warranty.

Thanks again, David

One thing to remember with IR thermometers is that you may have to compensate the results depemding on the type of material being measured.

eg. The results for copper tube will be different from steel tube, the tool should come with correction tables and bear in mind the accuracy/tolerance probably varies with the price.
