I use IR cameras and lenses for anti-poaching purposes, and have recently come across some very useful FLIR handheld scopes.

FLIR also have a device called a LEPTON, which might form the basis for a RaspberryPi or Arduino IR viewer.

The practical technology is far beyond my rustic skills, so would one of the forum techies care to cast an eye over the site and possibilities, please ? The objective would be

a) a heat spot detector for the boat plus alarm

b) an IR scope

First impressions:
  • Looks straightforward to interface using I2C, and the basic code to get you going is provided.
  • Relatively expensive (compared to the cost of a pi) - about £100 for 80x60 resolution, or £180 for 160x120, plus £30 for the breakout board (and £30 for the Pi)
  • Heat spot detector and alarm is perfectly feasible
  • If you mean tele- rather than oscillo- scope I think you'd be very disappointed - this is what you can expect to see

Additionally, for an alarm you'd need some way to send the information, such as wifi or SMS .. but that's been covered in great length here in the past.

caveat, I'm not a techie ..
