informing the coastguard

No i never inform the CG of my boat movements specially
when i'm smuggling!!, be like grassing myself up.

Tried finding out about this when going from Gosport to Falmouth last year, completed an online CG66 but that was it, and wasn't even sure how useful that would be!!

All we did was kept my mum and Dad informed of departure a few locations on route and when we arrived, they knew what we were doing how long it should take and when to panic if they hadn't heard from us!!

Was a bit odd chatting to them in the middle of Lyme bay giving them coordinates and telling them of a change in passage!! Still my Dad enjoyed working out where we were!

Even if I'm just going out for a blast round the solent I do actually try to make a point of telling someone I'm going out and when I expect to be back, usually build in a bit of slack and also advise if plans change.

Probably different in the old country, but we always inform the coastguard every trip of our DTN, POB, ETA, FWHTC, and any changes to our ETA back into port.

Often called on then for tows, investigations, drifting windsurfer, snagged on cray pots, lost anchor blah de blah - but time, you see, to take care of those things usually fixed in the end with a bottle of Bunderburg Rum being the salvage currency.

Seems pretty much accepted practice in the lower antipodes' but then we know the coastguards by name and the personal bit, nosey mostly (he's out wif the wife & kids!), is part of the one big happy boating family syndrome there - possibly unlike the more formal er, earning me living, back there. (or here, as I am).

I radio in to Portland CG for cross-channel and longer trips, say to Torquay/Dartmouth/Solent (boats based in Weymouth) as it's usually just me and my all female crew (SWMBO and daughters). When arriving in say Cherbourg I will phone Portland CG to let them know I'm there. Before returning from Cherb etc I'll phone Portland CG. I always complete the log for these longer trips. Not necessarily right for others, its just what I do. I've completed the CG66 and given the details to people ashore (parents etc) and same know where/when we are going.

Hope that helps!

Never tell the CG...it clogs up the system and what happens if you forget to phone them back and report safe arrival?

Buy a nice EPIRB and set it off if you get in real trouble...or better still be a herring...hang by your own tail!
