Am sizing up suitable spots for the Autumn cruise the week after next and would appreciate some local input on the following.

Roach - since our favourite spot has been blighted by a landfill site, does anyone know the situation with moorings and getting ashore at Paglesham boatyard? Understand it has been for sale for some time and have heard rumours of access being discouraged. Also heard there is a lot of lowlife living on the foreshore now.

Blackwater - Not been to Bradwell since our previous poor experience when based there in 2000/2001. Assume same ownership still. Does anyone know if the Green Man does decent beer (i.e. not Greene Thing)? Alternatively, anyone been to the Kings Head recently?

Colne - note the harbourmaster now runs the 'marina' pontoons (see forum passim). Anyone know if visitors can use them and if there is power available?

Thanks in advance.

(PS. It is appreciated that, based on this mornings output from our friends at the NOAA, it looks like a week at the Three Ducks is probable, but I have promised to do the research.)

By Colne - 'Marina' pontoons I assume you are referring to Brightlingsea. Assume there is power but do not know about visitor use. Think there is at best half tide access. Suggest you phone Harbour Office 01206 302200.

Had heard that the local yuff use the boats in the 'marina' for target practice after being on the pop of an evening.

The mid stream pontoons are available for visitors but no electricity. Water Taxi operates to end of Oct Fri evenings, Sat & Sun all day. HM operates a taxi on other days during working hours so midweek you will need to get yourself ashore in the evening.

Green Man - think I had Adnams when I was there a few weekends ago. Menu is varied and offers good, value for money food to fancy stuff.

Where is the landfill site?

The Roach is our favourite anchorage (better than the Backwaters IOHO).

Never had any problems at Paglesham, including this year. There is 1 visitors mooring, known as the 'barge buoy', it's the first buoy you come to on the port hand side just past the channel markers at the start of Paglesham reach. A scruffy lad in a flubber with a little dog will come and collect a fiver (IIRC) from you. Getting ashore on the hard is not a problem (assuming you have a dinghy), though wellies are recommended as it's a bit muddy.

Many thanks for these responses.

Mike, the landfill site is on Barling Ness, although I haven't been in the Roach since 2006, so it may be finished (full!!) by now. What is the Plough and Sail like these days?

Ah, we assumed the noise was farm machinery but landfill makes more sense. I'm a bit confused about the P & S being 'rowdy' - the last couple of times we've been there it's been mostly little old ladies having dinner. Food is good. Beer is good. But as with most out-of-town pubs these days they survive by being full of tables for eaters with 'reserved' signs on them, not drinking dens.

Plough & Sail is at least 200 metres from shoreline, I have never heard anything in 20 years.
Good Food, and I can tever remember them having a Disco.

When? That will be wotrh going to.

One Swallow does not a Summer make though.

One Jazz festival is hardly Wetherspoons on Southend Sea Front!
