Hi,

I hope to sell my 2006 Targa 34 (currently on EBY) to buy a Fairline Squadron 43.

I dont have the full spec yet on the SQ43 but its a 1997 model with twin TAMD72's. Can anyone tell me anything to look for that might give me problems or any other useful advice regarding running and operating one of these boats? Many thanks.

I'm almost sure it was featured as a used buy in a recent issue of MBY or MBM, sorry can't remember which mag or which issue, but in the last 12 months I think.

Hi John,

I wondered if that was your boat! Good price and if I had a few more £'s I would have it! (Short by about 60,000 of them though!)

Can I ask why you are switching to a Flybridge and not a larger sportscruiser (Targa 43)

Cheers

Paul

I know that I'm a confirmed flybridge owner but generally speaking, I believe that FB boats offer much more accomodation. In the Med, it seems that a boat is more of a "home from home" and space becomes important.

The flybridge can still be used for outdoor entertaining etc whilst the saloon can be isolated from those very hot days. Also a flybridge boat helsp to keep the mozzies out - we have had very little trouble from the little critters but I believe that others have been bitten.

I've never owned a sports boat but thats my view.

Hurricane pretty much has it. My T34 is an excellent boat and perfect for the Med. However, since we have been out here (in Sant Carles Marina) we have had numerous friends and family visit us, its a great boat but with so many on board it can get a little crowded. We both like the Squadron 43, more room, saloon with patio doors, it seems just the right size for us. I spent some time on a flybridge boat in Feb 2008 and must say on the whole I enjoyed the experience.

I will no doubt miss the speed, reliability and solid handling of the T34, buy hey you cant have everything and a happy SWMBO means more years boating! :)

Well I think your going to get a lot of boat for the money, however there has been one advertised for around 106k in holland, so dont be paying much more.

I have worked on a few, the TAMD73 was not a particularly good engine as it seems to suffer from premature failure at low hours, the 74 and 75 series with the bigger cubic capacity is better, engine access is not that good as its surrounded by interior furniture.

The cooling side of the engine is the old style 71 B series system, they seem to smoke a lot on cold start up too, get a full survey by an engineer not a plain surveyor.

I think the Princess 440 is a lot better boat for virtually the same money.

I have also seen one taken apart inside to cure the front screens frames that always leak it was stapled together in places and glued panels and poor quality wooden frames made up the inside, which i thought was poor quality for a fairline.

SQ 43

Hi hope the deal goes through with the new boat, don't forget to check all that safety equipment,we don't want any tube heater's in the wrong place do we!!,regards MM1.

Hi Jez

It's a two berth with two en-suites. Why?

Oh no reason, its just one of the things that attracts me to the SQ43 was the option of having three cabins, two doubles midships and the master forward.

I have always thought that the most popular option as it gives decent sleeping for 6, and you still get the two heads. Main difference is the galley is smaller and raised up. Dunno what numbers were built in each configuration, but from whats on the market I reckon it was probably 50/50

I think there could be swings and roundabouts there, Jez.
Remember the T51?
Three cabins squeezed in - OK for the UK and short spells away but John has been out in Spain for months now and I dont know when he expects to get back. It might be better to have fewer cabins but with more space in each cabin - and then more in the galley. I havent seen either of the layouts but I would give each one a closer look - not just because you get an extra cabin.

However, I believe that the second hand value holds better with three cabins - a reason that the Squaddie 52 wasnt particularly succesful - just a 2 cabin boat.

From my own point of view the same arguement on the larger boat - remember SIBS a few years ago when I asked you which you preferred the Princess 62 or the 67? We eventyally opted for the bigger boat with fewer cabins for the same reasons that I mention above - more comfort.

Mike,

We do like the space the two cabin layout gives us.

I have also just found out that the engines are indeed as you thought, Caterpillar Model 3108 V8 Turbocharged diesel's. I am not familiar with Cat's, can anyone tell me how well these engines perform and if they are reliable!

Many thanks

Hi John if your engines are the 3208 v8 engines they are good in 375/not so good in 425 and not very good at all in the 435 and 442 hp versions as they dont have piston oil cooling jets and suffer from premature failure ive rebuilt one at 600 ish hours on the clock just down to wear and tear, the boat was nice and well serviced, i would look elsewhere personally the mpg figures will be about 25 gallons per hour at 18/20 knots or around 0.6 mpg not good.

Maybe look for one with the 3126 420 cat 6 cylinder engines in.
