I have an Fleetguard FF167 A prefilter element on my water seperator / pre fuel Filter. I believe it is called a CAV flter. When I search the internet they don't seem to be readily available. I do see some Baldwin BF825 which are supposed to be a direct replacement.
Has anyone used the Baldwin part ?

Do I need to spec the O rings I require or are they automatically included with the kit. I believe there are 4 or 5 o rings in these units.

I see from previous threads that these filters can be troublesome and require careful attention !

Im nervous of the filter as we had problems in France last year when we lost revs when driven hard and had to nurse her through the Cherbourg current at 2000 Revs. A mechanic went through the system and put the blame on a misplaced top gasket. I believe he was correct as we haven't had any issue since. I'd like to give myself every help with a good replacement filter kit.

Fleetguard is just another brand of filter, nothing special. Just about all filter manufacturers make an element for the standard CAV filter. You are right the sealing rings have to be installed properly.

I'm using Baldwin filters at the moment, they just happened to be cheapest the last time I bought a batch. Baldwin and Fleetguard are just two of many brands that provide equivalent CAV filters. Delphi own the CAV/Lucas brand, so their 296 are the 'official' ones, but these are hardly high tech and the equivalents are just as good.

I've never bought one that didn't have the rings in the box (and that covers a fair range of brands). I often just re-use the old one if it looks ok.

They are a bit fiddly to fit but are otherwise fine, so I wouldn't agree with troublesome and require careful attention.

Perhaps I am not remembering this correctly but is there not an issue relating to selecting the correct ring for the right location?
I have a vague recollection of a problem way back which was down to me putting very similar rings in the wrong order so that air was getting in, my excuse, I was single handed on passage from Carrickfergus to Ardrishaig, everything going well until around dawn when the wind died and the engine would not start, no sea running or anything just tiredness.

The large rings are 2 slightly different sizes.

If you have a filter with a glass bowl, you need an additional large sealing ring, which isn't normally supplied with a filter cartridge. It's the same size as one of the others. However, I've found that re-using an old ring is rarely a problem.

I'll go with the Baldwins.
I will take care to identify which ring goes where. My bowl is metal rather than glass so that should simplify the O ring choice.
Quandary , i think there is something in what you are saying about the O rings . I vaguely remember that one of the large two rings has a slight V profile on one flat but not on the other and the mechanic re orientated the ring to get it to seal. In a state of delirium at getting the engine running again, I forgot to make a note or take a photo! Anyway Ill watch out for orientation as i strip the parts.

Thanks quys,
