to start with some manufacturer's info.
It is labelled as S.O.M.

2:1 Rapp di Riduz Kgm USCITA
Can anyone point me in the direction of
where I might find some guidelines on
adjusting the thing!
It was installed in about 1981
My Italian is probably better than my engineering skill, but not a lot.

SOM Gearbox Problem

You are lucky to have a label left on it! What is the fault? If it is slip and you cannot buy new clutch plates you could try buying the paper Motor Cycle News. Often there are companies advertising clutch re-facing services. Good luck!

Industrial Friction Materials Ltd Cardiff may be able to help.

A post revived from 2001!

This has surely got to be the all time YBW record - 11 years. :)

Posted by a Guest as well - I didn't know that was even possible!

S.O.M Gearbox Problems

Googling 'SOM gearbox' finds that someone else asked the almost identical question in 2006. He had no responses either (might be the same boat?). Not a common transmission, it seems.

The problem keeps on recurring as barnacles on the propeller or rope tangled around it can burn the clutches. The clutches are the wet multiplate type similar to those in motorcycles. Now then, on the hobby boat that only gets used a few times a year if the weather is nice the clutches might last for several decades. For the live-aboard in the Caribbean who is constantly moving around because of the hurricane season and visa expirations it is a whole different ball game as the engine is in more or less constant use.
According to the book engine oil should be used. It is noteworthy however that Hurth gearboxes which also employ multi-plate clutches use ATF.

SOM Spa were taken over by Comer Industries in 1978, however in 1990 SOM took over Frama so they were still operating as their own entity in 1990. Comer still have a repair shop in Leicester LE9 9FE so there is still a faint chance that these forty year old boxes can be repaired. Why not? good machinery should always last a hundred years.

Unfortunately in the modern throw-away-society, marine engines are often binned after just a few years. As to those clutch plates, there are still companies in the north of England who will bond-on new friction material.

According to Petters at one time a marine engineering firm in Southampton specialised in rebuilding the SOM gearboxes that were fitted to the Petter Mini-6. Unfortunately if you phone them today young lads will deny all knowledge of this.

SOM Transmission

The SOM was extremely common on the UK marketed Petter Mini-6. Usually the engines die long before the gearboxes as corrosion of the alloy head is a big problem if the anodes are neglected. If one can obtain an OEM rare-as-hens-teeth gasket containing asbestos the gasket will last OK. Even so the water areas of the gasket will benefit from a very thin layer of Granville Chemicals Black High Temperature Silicone Sealant. An overheat alarm also needs to be fitted and a LARGE basket type water strainer to catch jellyfish tentacles etcetera. There was also a freshwater cooled "Westerbeke 7" version of this engine but the Westerbeke did not use the SOM gearbox. Instead it used a Paragon SSR transmission.
