Afraid i cant help at the moment as due to inpending move i have got rid of my wreck books and charts. I would reccomend you buy a book called the wrecks of liverpool bay. This book gives all the details of sinkings, cargo, losses positions etc.
Price is about 8 squid.

Hi dave thanks for getting back to me, That book you mention I have that one unfortunatly the pegu is not listed in it.

Hi Nick.
Best I can do at the moment is,
Pegu, Glasgow armed steamer 6348 tons it was in ballast when torpedoed by U57 7 miles s/e liverpool. I think a bit earlier than 1939 1917 ish.
If I find out anymore I will post on here.
regards Dave

Pegu is mentioned here http://www.red-duster.co.uk/BIBBY3.htm

Here http://www.shipwreckcharlestown.com/print%20pages/List%20of%20shipwrecks.htm it states that the Pegu went down 1917 S. Ireland.

Another mention here http://www.clydesite.co.uk/clydebuilt/dumbarton.asp

A list and demise of all 6 ships named Pegu http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/burma.htm

This is the best mention of the incident http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/descriptions/ShipsP-Q.html
and I copy the item - courtesy of "The Ship List".
PEGU 1919
O.N.144260, 8,084 gross tons, length 466ft x beam 59.2ft, one funnel, two masts, single screw, speed 13 knots, accommodation for 150-1st class passengers. Built by Wm. Denny & Bros., Dumbarton, she was launched on 14th Dec.1920 for Burmah S.S. Co & British & Burmese S.N. Co. Ltd (P. Henderson & Co.), Glasgow. Due to a joiners strike, she was sent to Le Havre for completion and was not delivered until 24th Dec.1921. Used on the Glasgow / Liverpool / Birkenhead - Burma service and in 1927 was used as a pilgrimage ship on the Rangoon - Jeddah route. In 1935 she was refitted and the passenger capacity reduced to 124. The company was renamed British & Burmese S.N. Co. Ltd the same year. On 24th Dec.1939 while inbound to the Mersey on voyage Glasgow - Liverpool - Rangoon with general cargo, and with buoy lights extinguished as a wartime measure, she grounded near Beta Buoy. Refloated on 26th, but struck the revetment and broke in two. Salvage was abandoned. [Merchant Fleets, vol.29 by Duncan Haws] [Register of Merchant Ships Completed in 1921 by Wm. Schell] She was a sister ship to the AMARAPOORA which became the well known New Zealand emigrant ship CAPTAIN HOBSON after the war.

ReToxteth

Hi
The Toxteth tug was tipped over as it assisted the Pego in 1937.

My great Uncle was killed in the tragedy. Anyone know anything about the incident please?

PEGU

The ship's bell was our school bell.

I went to Whiteacre Boarding SChool, Whalley, Clitheroe. It was a state boarding school.

The school bell had the word PEGU on it. There was no plaque to refer it's history.

I understand the buildings of the school were originally in military use.

We ascribed the nemonic PEGU to be the initial letters of Please Everyone Get Up, since this was our rising bell.

The bell was also rung for meals and breaks.

We would like to know what became of the bell after the school was closed down following a fire.

If anyone can shed more light on this I would be pleased to hear.

Pegu Bell & its whereabouts :)

The ship's bell was our school bell.

To follow up on the Pegu Bell ..... i have the bell here in east yorkshire ....its a stunner ..... if anyone would like a photo of it ... please contact me on D4wdec@aol.com
