The drain plug on my inflatable is letting in water, should it let water drain out when taken out of water? Not to sure? and should I just silicon around it and put it back in? thanks for help JBD

What a brilliant idea, an inflatable drain plug. Just push in the deflated plug, pump it up a bit and Hey Presto, no water ingress or exit. Suits a variety of drain sizes and a useful emergency aid.

some have a plug, some a 'one way valve', and others both.

which ever combination you have it shouldn't let water in - although if the plugs out and a valve is fitted it may well weep.

water will only get out if a plug is removed..........

Many thanks Duncan for advise although I really don't understand if Waterboy is trying to be helpfull or what? I have only recently purchased same and noticed on first outing some water after using and yesterday it was quite bad, needed bailed! the valve/plug comes out but looks as though there is a soft rubber washer still held inside part that is fixed on transom? this is my reason for asking should it have some kind of sealant around the plug part before putting it in, or does this rubber washer need replacing, thanks for now. JBD

the rubber washer is the 'non return valve' and, as Talbot highlights it's prone to getting grit or weed and not sealing too well.
The plug on the other hand is just that and should provide a good seal - look for damage around the inside of where the plug seals.

Also you can get a bit of a leak around the whole plug fitting where it's set in the transom.

As none of these are normally more than the water bought onboard by wet legs when embarking from the beach I never worried about it.

Re: Drain plug on inflatable

OK fine Duncan, I was able to watch it dripping in and checked fit of plug at transom when in water which seemed to make it worse, I looked at it today and found lots of dried sand in there, will dust out with dry paint brush and seal with some silicon grease, also check out seal around transom which is wooden, I'll post results, excuse ignorance on subject, thank you for help. Re: Drain plug on inflatable

Greasing it may make matters worse. The grit has something to stick to. Better, IMO, just to flush it out every once in a while.

The drain plug on our Plastimo 2.4m leaked from new. Turned out there was no sealant between the plug housing and the transom. Couldn't be arsed to complain - 2 mins to remove plug housing & squirt in some gunge - lets water out but not in, now.
