Is there such a thing as an inexpensive option to set up my Garmin 78S handheld for a trip in the Saronic Gulf?

Or do I just bite the bullet and buy the Garmin SD Chart???

Or even just use the old fashioned Nav techniques....

There are extremely inexpensive, and extremely illegal, options if you are good enough with a search engine. Be wary of viruses!

I think Stu's method is a good one.

Get yourself a 16 quid Imray chart. The Garmin built in world map will tell you where land lies, waypoints will keep you out of trouble and the chart will be great for planning.

If you have a mobile and are due for an upgrade, a waterproof Motorola Defy and Navionics might be a solution. It's a very nice piece of kit, I've used one to Navigate along the North Coast of Brittany in and out of the rocky bits at 20knts+ where a chart would have been impossible to use.
