Inexpensive alternative alternator for a Mercedes OM636?

Is this the regulator?

The regulator is mounted separately from the alternator, follow the wires back. Usually put in a cpbd out of the heat of the engine room either an aliminium box often with yellow tape to keep the lid on, or a squarish block of aluminium and potted electrics with a black plastic front. if the yelow tape type, remove the lid then hold the relay arm in to the contact, ie not the contact welded to the case.that will give full output. (so long as wires windings & diodes are ok)

Does the aluminium box with yellow tape in the attached picture look like the regulator? An emergency charge would be very handy right now.

I would be happy to be corrected but that looks like the resistor used with the old style glow plugs? And therefore not the separate voltage regulator for the alternator.

Hi, this is my first time posting to this board and I am a novice to boating.
Since your profile says you are a liveaboard then you should consider upgrading your alternator and external regulator to something that will do the job much better - but it will cost you a lot more than the Westfield replacement of £180!

Search these forums for lots of posts on this subject, or check out this recent posting:

box on the right is definitely the regulator. take cover off and look at the contacts, particularly the one that is not grounded to the case. clean said contact. voltage can be raised by bending tag under spring at top, but a better answer is to pack something under the spring, as they are difficult to adjust absolutely correctly. be warned the boxes are supposed to get hot and give a nasty burn from the resistor plate on the bottom of the box, which is outside the enclosed section. (takes me back a few years, which is probably why I remember it so clearly )

One of the reasons I am wanting to go on the cheap with this alternator is that sometime in the near future I hope to go electric by selling the Mercedes Om636 and replacing it with an Agnimotor 95. I have 1KW of solar panels waiting on a friends balcony ready to be installed along with an MPPT Solar charge controller. Here's the blog; http://electricsirena.co.uk

I have an identical alternator on my Mercedes OM636 (purchased new in 1978). The field coils on this alternator have failed and I am unable to find any identification markings on the alternator. It would be very if anybody can identify the make and model. Is it a Bosch alternator or was it manufactured by Mercedes ?

Definately made by Bosch. (Bosch also did the starter motor and injection system)

Take it to a truck electrical specialist for repair. Where are you in the uk as can recommend a few in the midlands.
