Bringing Marmalade back from St Kats yesterday, we found ourselves on the Thames at dawn - sometimes the light can make even the ugly industrial landscape look pretty...

Simon - Mrs Moody wants to know how long did it take you to get from St Kats to Ipswich and did you do it one go?

Hi Roger, Pyro, Flipper & I brought Croix Des Gardes back from Limehouse a couple of years ago. SYH in one hit, 90 miles, 12 hours, though it was pretty breezy which helps CdG. We were originally going to overnight at Stangate and continue the next day, but picked up the marine forecast just after the barrier, we all thought we'd better push on as 10s were in there for the following 24 hrs.
Great sail tho', and doable.

We left St Kats at about 6.30pm on Friday evening and stopped at Thurrock YC at about 9.30pm where we picked up a mooring and got some grub on. After a rolly night's kip (loads of ship-wash) we took the 0600 tide out of the river (when I took the pic) and were back in Shotley shortly after lunch.

By stopping we wasted about 2.5 hrs of fair tide but my crew and I had both been at work all day so some food, a beer and some shut-eye were all v welcome.

We got wet on Friday evening but Saturday was fine and we sailed up to the whittaker when the wind finally headed us and went through the spitway at low water with 0.3m under us (ie 2.3m of water). That's a foot; or 9 inches more than necessary for an eastcoaster.

I quite liked the industrial silhouette against the dawn - appealed to the contrary nature in me I expect...

Took this a few bends later as the sun came over the cloud...

I think a bit of industry can make a river or scenery more interesting, or at least add a human dimension and enjoyed the first photo a lot.

Over the years I have also enjoyed looking at industry when they used to build ships at Wivenhoe, though we still have the gravel works. I have also admired the scenery on the Scheldt on the way to Antwerp and the oil terminal in the Solent. My favourite was seeing the docks at Gdansk in the evening sun, with a glorious range of colour and views. I have even been known to admire Bradwell.

There was once a Coroner who I appeared in front of who wouldn't accept colour photographs of scenes on the grounds they were highly misleading! These lovely shots would be good evidence for him :D
