Hi Folks,

I just purchased my first boat in The Netherlands and was excited till I got a bit frustrated with the outboard motor.
It is a Mariner 8HP 2 stroke outboard made in 1985. (Mariner 8M 677 L 382900)
The previous owner hadn't used it for over a year so I decided to dumped the old gas and refilled with the pre-mixed(50:1 ratio) sold in a gas station.
The first day it worked without much problem but I only used it for less than 20 minutes just to get used to steering and never went full-throttle.

From the second ride I kept getting this problem of the engine would first stall in a lower throttle power and simply stops.
If I accelerate when it is about to stall, the engine will survive the moment but eventually it will die at some point and it seems like the interval becomes shorter and shorter every time I try to run it.
First time I run the engine it will start without any problem and stays running the longest. Once the engine gets cut off, it becomes harder to restart and if it finally does, it won't stay too long.
After reading a lot of trouble shooting I was quite sure it could be the gunk in the carburetor. I took it apart and cleaned out every hole with spray but the problem remains.

Another symptom is while it runs normally, there will be a point it suddenly make an explosive sound and runs quite aggressively and that is the prelude before the engine dies or stalls and dies.
sometimes that explosion forces the gear to move from neutral to forward. also the engine sometimes seems to run fine while in neutral but once I change the gear to forward it will make that make that aggressive move and die shortly after.

The water comes out fine from the pee hole if not a strong stream so I am not sure if it can be a problem with the impeller either.
My friend who is more experienced with motors mentioned it could be the thermostat being problematic so I was going to try it as my next move.
How do you know if that could have been the factor though? just try to change it and see if it works better or are the symptoms I mentioned above relates to the thermostat?
Honestly I don't even know where I would be able to find the part for this old motor.

any comment or advice would be deeply appreciated.
