Hi everyone,

Just picked up a new boat and going through all the systems trying to figure out what’s what.

Does anyone know why this fuel water separator filter looks so dark at the bottom? I know you’re supposed to drain these out, and after loosening the plug very little water came out. In fact, I could remove the plug completely and it stopped draining.

I thought these were supposed to drain until fresh fuel came out?

Various Google searches later and I couldn’t figure it out.

Thanks everyone.

Yuk, that doesn't look good. Before you replace the filter and clean out the housing which is probably blocked, you might try and take a sample of the fuel out of the tank. Or if its possible remove any inspection hatch and use a torch or phone camera.

If that is the tank on the far left of the picture, it won't syphon if the fuel level is below the level in the filter housing.

Strangely enough the fuel in the tank looks absolutely fine. As far as my untrained eye can tell.
well you might then get away with a good clean and new filter. Oh and dose the fuel with something like Marine 16 for good measure. Just keep some spare filters on board too.
