Does it mean it's denser so the boat is slower.

or
Cos its denser the wetted area is lower so the boat is faster

or is colder water less dense and the reverse true?

When the water is colder it is indeed denser. But then, the boat floats higher, so it goes better as there is less in the water. It just feels slower because you are cold/ sober/ sloshed/ whatever, so that your appreciation of all around you is different.
Thats all.

Acshully I think your wrong if colder water is indeed denser why does ice float?

If i remember correctly.. H2O gets more dense to 277deg K, then does something very odd on its way to becoming ice, and then floats. Very odd stuff.

The water gets denser, but so does the air, and the rate of change of the air density is much greater than the rate of change of the water density. The result should be that for a given wind speed the driving force is higher in winter, and the speed greater. But it's not going to help you in a race, cos everyone else goes faster, too.

Don't know - but more importantly I can drink G & T straight out of the locker without having to hunt down ice! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

That's why one changes to winter topmast, bowsprit and sails for winter cruising or at least Claud Worth did.

water becomes more dense so more wave making resistance
boat shrinks so less water to displace, also less wetted surface
viscosity increases so more skin friction

so it all balances out.

Also, the higher the boat floats, the shorter the waterline giving a reduced maximum hull speed.

wasn't actually discussing the performance of the crew but since you started it, last time out, visits below took twice as long owing to need to search for that which had shrivelled. and by the time i found it i was thoroughly seasick.

makes me wish i was back in the tropics where you don't care how fast the boat is going as long as the beer is cold.

It gets a bit denser so you float higher with less resistance.

It gets a bit thicker as it gets colder too.

Let us know whether you go faster, slower or just the same.
