In the mire can you help?

I let someone drive my boat on saturday, he said the steering failed and created the situation.
i have full no claims and don't want to loose it, so I am looking for secondhand parts to fix it myself.
Does anyone have any bits or a secondhand drive at the right price?

This is what greeted me on Sunday when the boat was lifted out.

To say I am annoyed is a massive understatement.

Re: In the mire can you help?

i'd do the sums carefully, probably cheaper to take the hit on no claims when you include lift out, parts, seals, oil, etc?

Re: In the mire can you help?

I would check your policy as it sounds like you were not on board, and in some cases this could invalidate your claim, so the insurance route might not be an option anyway.

Re: In the mire can you help?

Last winter on lift out I found one of the swivel plates on my enfieds was cracked right across, I managed to tig weld it quite succesfully and it's still going fine now (I think), I also built up a lug on the bottom that locked into the hook on the stern plate at the bottom as mine didn't have them, that should prevent a reocurence.
If you bolt it to a hub it will keep in line while welding.

I have for many years now, had a solution for borrowers, if you want to borrow anything, it comes back, at mimimum, in the same state it left, in most cases better than when it left, and if you can't afford to replace it if you break it,......... don't ask.

but like yourself, I had to learn the hard way first,

sorry for your grief.

thanks for the info, I will call him.

and to reply to others I was aboard (down below) so I am insured

Re: In the mire can you help?

If that was caused by an impact while moving forward I would guess it was already cracked as the enfields should lift, if it has had problems lifting in reverse before it may have been fixed badly(usually a filing job on the catch).

Yep I work on the same principle............

If you bend it...you mend it!

We all know where we stand then!

Re: In the mire can you help?

Surely thats what insurance is for ? Loss of some no claims cant be more than a repair bill. For the record i try not to borrow or lend anything for this very reason. Easy said with hind sight i spose

Re: In the mire can you help?

Not really revelant, but if you were on the boat you must have a good idea if he caused the problem or was just unlucky and happened to be steering the boat when the outdrive failed.
