In tests 4 out of 10 yachtsmen...

Yes indeed, £31 for a 35 footer on the walk ashore pontoons, plus say £5 in shower tokens.

But I will keep paying, we had another perfect weekend at Yarmouth. One night on the harbour wall £16 within stumbling distance of Saltys, then on the Sunday a 4 mile hike along the estuary and nature walk to Freshwater Bay, 3 hours on the beach concluding with dinner at the Red Lion.

I cannot think of anywhere else in the UK that can provide all that.
Then you need to get out more.... :D

I can think of quite a few places..... admittedly at no less cost though....

You have to pay to anchor in Braye - Alderney - £5/night I believe ...
I can see why they charge - they've got a bluddy great big sea wall that makes the anchorage viable. If you don't want to pay then there are other free anchorages around... just without "easy" access to shoreside facilities and less protected from the elements.

You have to pay to anchor in the Beaulieu River. Slightly different situation to the others because the seabed belongs (uniquely) to Beaulieu Estates rather than the Crown, so they have a perfect right to do so. Unlike most of the other chancers mentioned here :)

Paying to anchor???
That is ridiculous. I thought that was a joke at first.

I think if you're in a "maintained" harbour, that employ people to look after the state of things (catch speeders, offer tows, keep the peace etc etc), and have a harbour master I think it's fair and reasonable to pay to anchor, nout ridiculous about it IMHO

If you're going to anchor off a beach, with no facilities or services then a fee would be asking a bit much.

I'll happily pay £3 for Chichester, and donate to Newtown/National Trust, they are nice places to go, and paying a little bit keeps them that way
