In praise of the Tilley Hat

I wonder just how worn the hat must be to qualify for replacement per the guarantee? Has anyone made a claim?

Yes, I was the one posting earlier. This was mine...

After and exchange of emails with their UK office and £5 for p&p I now have a new one. The old one, sewn up with my needle and palm is now a reserve.

I really don't care if snobs think I look daft in it. It's comfortable and keeps the sun off. 300% better than a baseball cap.

Incidentally there are many styles, some with wide floppy brims, some smaller and more rigid and some with ventilation in the crown.

I want a larger rigid one - see my post 5

Is wearing a Tilley hat as detestable a crime as wearing red trousers, or a Breton cap, or (boo hiss) having a blue ensign?

Surely any of them's only a detestable crime to people with silly prejudices?

The price [of a Tilley hat] certainly doesn't suggest 2nd-rate; nor does the workmanship; nor the warranty. How does an Akubra stand up to a saltwater dunking?

Probably rather poorly: they're made of felt. I haven't tried with mine. Yet. But the Aussie hat I sometimes use on board is a more robust and cheaper fabric.

Yours was spectacularly well-used - which doesn't really indicate to me if my own 15-year old Tilley, just starting to fray at the brim, could be returned for a new one. I think they're brilliant, and even if I look daft wearing it, it's better looking than melanoma.

+1 sez he, pulling on his wed trizers(Cuwwy's , of couwse), swopping his Breton kep for his white Tilley and Club silk cravat:encouragement:

Tilley hat - useless bit of kit. sailing in a breeze - rim blows up - stays up - face burnt.

No its cowboy/sombrero shaped hats for me.
You can clip the sides up if you need to. I love my Tilley; I'm not a 'hat person' either, but the Tilley is one of the only ones I've ever worn that I will willingly put on without cajoling.

When I was younger image was a factor - no longer and now it's comfort and function hence Tilley and Breton. Incidentally the next generation seem even less concerned about image, can't see anything looking out of place on this chap (assuming it is a chap):

Happy looking chap - must have been worth it then...

I wonder if the nose makes a 'woooooo' sound if you stand at a certain angle to the wind?

Suppose it makes it easier to pick your nose, but how the hell do you blow it? I mean, like.....eurghh!
