My father (now retired) was a supersonic aircraft designer and the government asked him to look at the recurring problem of the Princess Margaret's split skirts in case there was any anolagy to aero design - at one stage there was a team of skirt repairers staioned each side of the channel keeping her looking respectable! It turned out that some kind of resonance was building up under the skirt which was a function of the speed and number of blades of the fans - I think they made a change to the fans and the problem subsided, so it wasn't actually much to do with wave impact.

It remained a little family joke that dad has looked up the skirt of Princess Margaret!

I can remember the first cross channel service running out of Ramsgate it was then moved to Pegwell Bay. I also remember the fact that from astern you could hear them from miles away but from ahead they were almost silent. Scared the s**t out of me on more than one occasion whilst I was digging bait on the "Bay".
