In Mast Furling Update

A bit of googling suggests that the traveller is rigged correctly. One of the reasons for the recent photo was to establish how much additional sail area was available. Kemps will make the new main longer in the foot to make use of the extra 14" of travel available.

I've posted this a few times on in mast threads. Years ago I bought both main and genoa from Paul Wilkinson at MaxiRoach. At the time of fitting he told me to keepa little bit of tension when furling. But importantly to lock off the outhaul when furled and then put a quarter turn on the furling line with the winch. (Think of a rolled up poster. Tighten it a little from the middle and it's a smaller roll. Less bunching at the slot on the way out. Slacken the main halyard when left but pinch up again before unfurling. Yes, let everything free so the boom can rise
when unfurling, including any kicker.

Which do you prefer?

Can anybody tell me why a block is needed on the boom outhaul? It would appear that the pull when bringing the sail out would be more direct ( i.e. More horizontal) without it.

Yes, but pulling the sail out is not the primary purpose, despite that being a major topic of this thread. When the sail is set, (downward) tension is needed on the leach, which is much longer than the foot, to reduce twist. So the block ensures that nearly twice the outhaul tension is applied downwards, originating from the mainsheet tension, especially when on the wind.

Mike.

If you didn't have the block and the traveler on the boom, the sail would probably be alright when it was pulled right out, but think what would happen when you wanted to sail with it partly furled (reefed). If it wasn't held downu to the boom, the sail wouldn't set properly. The leach would be loose.

Must type faster.:D
