i may have been invited to accompany the auld goat getting his bath chair wheeled back down to fleetwood, although he may expire beforehand, and am turning my attention to the victuals. Having demonstrated some ability in the fishing dept from his boat. i thought to bring a fish-smoker.

There is one problem of how best to expedite the wee beasties and another, more fundamental one.

The former problem is whether to buy the deeper smoker which might imply a substantial fish being caught eg:

and the latter problem is will there be any fish to be caught in late October?

ps these smokers are fantastic and easy way of cooking the little buggers ... all other things being equal ...

I think in your position I would buy up a selection of smoked hadock, makrel and salmon from you local super market.

You elderly friend probably wont notice and even if he does I'm sure he will forget about it .. you know dementia and stuff really means that recent memory cells don't work very well.. he'll still be able to yarn on about when he was a lad and the cauliflowers were as big as footballs tho' as this is in very very loooooooooong memory!

Re: In a quandary ...

thank you for your kind and thoughtful reply ... the shorter of the two might come in handy for other stews etc ...

ra fush have to be topped and tailed anyway so judicious slicing is acceptable ... i've a feeling that a visit to the oban fishmonger (where he's opened an account) might be in order .. he's completely useless at setting the boat up for such an activity ....

Whils't one can only be in awe of your caring & considerate forthought for your elderly academic aquaintance, in this voyage of discovery. Are not smokers fuelled by wood? does not the end product when smoked over GRP chips, have an aquired taste... Will there be sufficient left of the elderly gentleman's vessel to make the trip worth while? and will their be cauliflower to soften the culinary treat that you propose? Earnestly seeking enlightenment!

Re: In a quandary ...

ah yes, a fine point you make because, indeed in the past, he has organised shore parties to collect wood and refreshments for his crew; furnishing them with chain-saw and axe but sadly without the means of navigating nor illumination such that the party generally has to forego the primary purpose of the mission in order to secure their personal survival ....

otherwise, it would be unwise to detach the many pieces of woodwork holding the auld kettle together .....
