another ipad question.....

Does anybody have comparison between the 2 apps and tell me the differnces?
also i guess for both app there will be free updates but is this for 1 year or longer?

thanks for help

I have used both apps. Navionics is dead easy. Imray is 'feature rich' and too fussy - too clever for its own good and I didn't find it user-friendly.

OV .... You summed it up exactly, I've tried 'em all and always come back to Navionics. Timely updates and easy to use. Imray .... to many features and tricky to use in practice. Someone in another thread was questioning the accuracy of Navionics but here on the East Coast that is not my experience.

It was slightly tongue-in-cheek re schoolboy errors eg 'Yatch Moorings', 'Felixtower' etc.

Don't think anyone was questioning the general accuracy.

I have both the Imray and Navionics on my I Pad.I am familiar with Imray as I have used their passage planning software for some years.I also have used Navionics on my chartplotter for nearly 10 years. My opinion is purely personal but I prefer the Imray as I have used their charts nearly all my sailing life.I like the fact that the chart shows what the paper chart shows i.e. all of the detail is available. With Navionics you have to zoom in and out to show different details i.e. more detailed buoys etc. I did not find Imray difficult to use (perhaps because I am familiar with Imray's system).I think placing waypoints is easier for instance. The Imray operating instructions are also available as a print out. I like the + and - buttons on Navionics for altering size of screen. On Imray you can only pinch/swipe with your fingers. On Navionics the boat marker(a triangle) can be too big if you are on a small scale i.e. if you are on a narrow river you have to zoom in a lot. However the Imray boat marker(a small boat) could sometimes do with being bigger. The Navionics covers a bigger area. The Imray North Sea area(my sailing area) does not cover inland waterways of Holland.Navionics does. You can buy the Imray Holland chart package which uses the 1800 series Dutch charts which I think are superior to the Navionic presentation. As I had the Imray North Sea app I bought the I phone version of the Navionics XL9 UK and Holland app This is less than half the price of the Navionics HD version for the I pad.I thought the I phone version was OK although it has less resolution than The HD, but my I pad is purely a back up as I have Plotter,Yeoman and GPS and MK1 eyeball as my main navigation tools.
There is a free Imray app covering the south coast of UK and you can try it and put in routes and waypoints etc to see if you like it.It will work as a full plotter but obviously only any good if you sail there.
All of the foregoing is just my own opinion.Others will have other opinions, quite rightly.
