I was in USA recently and visited a lake where there were a lage number of fast day boats. I was intrigued that many of them had huge through transom exhausts as well as exhaust outlet through the Mercruiser outdrive.
I sought out a marine engineer and asked him what the story was here. He explained that there was a dashboard switch which electrically activated a divert valve to route exhaust to leg or through transom as desired. He confirmed that the exhausts were 'wet' and unsilenced and explained that it was an optional extra when the boat is made .. and quite an expensive one at that.
So I asked him "well why would any one want to do that, it must make a hell of a racket"
Thinking he was going to say it's all about Horse Power and that kind of stuff, he replied" right - it sounds just like a dragster - they do it to impress the girls".
