Sometime ago I bought some cheap rope at a boat jumble. It's a bit stiff and has a rough outer braid with an iner which is lightly twisted (i.e. neither braid nor 3 strand). I never expected much from it, but it has been fine and has been useful to have in the locker.

The other day I wanted to splice an eye in it but I haven't even been able to get the outer braid open enough to be able to bring the core out. I've done the obvious thing of pushing the outer braid back in a fruitless attempt at getting a bit of slack into the braid.

Am I missing some simple technique, or do I have to accept that some ropes simply can't be spliced?

Some ropes can't really be properly spliced.
You could taper something else into the core and just splice an eye in the new core, depending on what strength you need from it.

It's certainly not like the Lidl stuff. It came from a bone fide boaty supplier, but I can't remember which one.

It's beginning to bug me. I'll try the brute force option. :D
