A friend of mine is retiring and returning to the UK from working in the USA. He wants to bring a boat back as they appear to be V good value.. But, are there not problems with the RCD and the construction approval of any boats being imported to the EU?

I need to warn him of the downside before he buys (imminent)

Re: Chris - see previous recent threads. nm

Thanks - found an operation call CEproof who will handle the import - costs from £2,000-5000. so probably worthwhile.

I understand that returning ex-pats can dodge VAT by declaring the boat as part of their personal effects but a newly aquired boat might present a problem. Lots of Brit/Euro boats for sale so that is worth a thought.

Yes, it is possible to import a boat into the UK as personal effects VAT free - I did that 6 yrs ago when returning to the UK after living in Switzerland. Check with HM Customs and Excise for their booklet on importation of boats and aircraft. Recall you must have owned boat for 6 mo prior to importation, and cannot sell for 12 months after unless willing to pay VAT. Vessel is then deemed VAT paid. There is also question of duty - mine was a Dehler, so duty free because made in the EU before being sold new in Switzerland. Must have all paperwork on boat to show where made, sales invoices, proof of ownership, etc. HMC+E used to have a special yacht section at Dover who were very knowledgable and helpful. Unfortunately they were scrapped a few years ago (cost-cutting), so now you have to deal with your local inspector. In most cases this means teaching him the rules since most tend to have little experience in this specialised subject.

one of my buddies bought a 72 ft ally one in florida, spent 2 yrs"doing up" sailed it back, cause he had been away for so long (did the bit of staying in florida for the max time, out for a day & return) he was able to claim as personal effects, along with 40 ft container full of p/up, harley, spares etc and avoid import and vat.
