I have a Dickinson Alaska boat heater that has reached the end of it's life and gone on to better things.Looking for a replacement I found one on line in the USA that is 650 us dollars, a lot less than here or in the UK.I have sorted the customs end (2.5% on top of price and postage) and vat has to be added on as well.
The thing that has stopped me is the postage cost. The suppliers want to send it by fed ex which is very expensive they say ordinary post is too risky.Has anyone got any light to shed on this as I want to fit a new heater this winter(I may get Santa to pay for it)cheers

You have to realize that the post in other countries is not the same as our post.
Shipment by Fed Ex would be normal and much safer as once you have paid for it (before shipment) you want it to arrive in one piece!

Hi .. Looked at a Diesel Heater myself .. $1250 so about £625 plus carriage at $125 .. Bought bits before so you have to add 2.5% to total cost ( Including Carriage ) then add 17.5% on top of that . So you are paying tax on tax /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif not the best. Watch who you deal with .. A Phone call helps to prove their is someone there and us a Credit Card that is Internet Friendly .. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

looking for a similar type heater, from your experience how would you rate it?
I guess if your looking for another one they must be pretty good, would you recommend this type of heater?
Cheers

I can buy one new for 629 dollars US.in the USA. Here they are over 900 pounds GB. So you can see why I am looking to import direct from the US myself.Doesn't it make you wonder where the difference comes from?
I have already looked into the vat and custom rates and even with these it is very much cheaper to buy in the US.

Well your lordship I think they are the whole cheese as we say here. The heater I have is very old and has become stained and the metal inside has got very thin.Rather than do it up I want to buy a new one just for the improvement in looks.
The heater gives out a steady heat which dries the boat as well(some heaters like gas put a lot of water into the air). The cold air is drawn from the bilge and after combustion exists via a chimney so the inside of the boat gets a nice dry heat. It's great for hanging wet gear around and looks good two.I don't have any great insider info about other types of heater as this one came with the boat and my last boat had no heater.

I have just been put in touch with A guy who works for DHL and its looking good for a personal delivery for peanuts.Fingers crossed. Thanks for the link all the same /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If you ask the seller to pay all VAT, duty, + CIF and send via FedEx, etc. there should not normally be anything to pay at this end. Then it depends what the seller puts on as the value.

Generally, buying from the USA, the pound against the dollar...but the GBP is tipped to fall:-

How much?

[/ QUOTE ]Don't know where you've looked, but no way are they over £900 - Kuranda list them at £660 inc VAT, and I'm sure there are similar or better deals to be had.

If you buy in the US at $629, by the time it arrives in the UK its total cost will be around £500, so still a significant saving. Provided, of course, it doesn't get damaged in transit. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
