I'm a non resident in Spain but I have a Spanish registered car and want to import a small boat trailer for my rib (the trailer is less than 750Kg).
Trailer prices in the UK are much lower than in Spain.
The trailer will be VAT paid and have an EC Certificate of Conformity which will allow me to have it pass their ITV trailer test.
Does anyone know the costs involved or if the trailer will be liable for any import or other taxes ?
Thanks

Do you have to import a trailer?
You could of dug it out of a field and cleaned it up and be registering it after 20 years.
You're not sure about the history etc.

How can you "import" anything from UK to Europe? No one can charge you import tax within the EU! Import it from Morocco and it would be a different matter, but UK - not an import, it was in the EU to start with.

Trailers have separate registration, ITV (MOT) etc in Spain.

I think as you are non resident then you can bring a trailer into Spain without problem BUT if you have a Spanish registered car then I think you would probably have to pay the 12% matriculation tax on the trailer.

You really need to talk to a Gestoria who will have a book of 'values' for trailers I imagine - they certainly have them for cars. I have imported two cars into Spain and on the one I had to pay tax on the valuation from the Gestoria's book was so low the 12% matriculation tax was not a big problem at all.

Mike suggested Antonio Garcia of ME Express, info@meexpress.net tel: +34 952 490028.

and if he is a gestoria then that would be a good place to start - if he is not a gestoria then he will ask one for sure and just load the bill which is fair enough I guess

You won't be able to use a trailer legally on a Spanish registered car unless the trailer itself is Spanish legal. That is to say that it has it's own registration document (Ficha Technica) with the trailer's technical details on it. Trailers over 750 Kg gross have their own system of registration and have their own number plate as well as the tow car number. They also need separate insurance to that of your car.

Antonio Garcia is, I believe, not a gestor (accountant) but fixes problems which many of us expatriates have in dealing with the Spanish authorities and specialises in vehicle re-registration. His motto is "Solutions for Everything". You could do worse than to consult him. I have no connection other than as a satisfied customer.

Cheers,

Mike

Good luck with trying to explain that to the traffic cops.
Here in France, you are OK up to 500kg. After that trailers are registered and carry papers. Further South, it gets more tricky and DIY stuff is not OK.

One of the interesting things is that, every Frenchman has a trailer, yet, when I lived in Portugal, hardly anybody used one. So, the police were not very interested in them. I imagine Spain, in the current climate, is more likely to check your credentials.
