I am considering a purchase of a 50ft yacht from America, and need to know what procedures there are to be followed. I would be grateful for any advice that can be given.

Roger,

I suggest you search the forum under CE compliance or CE regulations... which any permanantly imported boat will need to comply with.... you will need to deal with many issues including proving stability figures, which can be calculated, but is not cheap to do.... CE compliance is complex, and can be very expensive.... you will also face import duties and VAT..... its often not as cheap as it looks......

Hi, I have thought of doing exactly the same. I wish you good luck. It is very complicated process and the length of research you should do is massive.

I recently found this website by accident, but its quite useful. http://www.ceproof.com/recreational_craft_directive_overview.htm

It is very complicated, but it will still usualy work out cheaper, however, its up to you if you take a risk on the CE marking, but you could face jail or a heafty fine.

Just be careful and make sure you know everything. Good luck. I'd like to know how you get on.

There have been a lot of threads on this and related subjects recently. suggest you search the archive under VAT, RCD, EU and CE. I have been involved with two such boats. It usually does work out cheaper, but how much cheaper depends on what sort of boat you buy and where in the States you buy it. It is not a quick fix to do it properly and you need to be prepared to view it as a long term project. PM me if you want to know more details. At least at 50 feet you are exempt UK import duty!!!
