I am refurbishing a jabsco raw water pump which has been idle since July. When I took out the impellor it resembled a "sat-upon" spider, flattened vanes, some of which had been lying opposed, due to shaft movement during removal. I guess the same would happen on an engine that falls back on compression when it stops. Anyway I plunged the impellor into a pan of boiling water and it almost immediately reverted to symetrical shape - just like new. As there are no cracks, it will go back into the spares box. Just thought I'd mention it.

should imagine putting the impellor into boiling water wont do much for the impellor to bush jointing compound

Just a quick plunge, the centre of this one is a heavy brass spline and I don't see the heat getting that far, however, in retrospect, I suppose an immediate coldwater plunge would be sensible. or leave it on the shaft to sink the heat further. Good point, thanks.
