Changed it last weekend - what a struggle.

Firstly the pumps difficult position. I also bought the speedseal kit and thought it useful that they also supplied a plastic lever to extract the impellor. Plastic lever moved it a couple of mm then it would not budge. Against my better judgement reluctantly heated a small screwdriver and bent the end to create a lever. Levered against the pump body side. Did impact the side a bit but rubbed it down with W & D paper. Anywhere in UK to buy a extractor tool. I have searched and note that the Yanmar impellor can be threaded on one end for using a special extractor but sod law I would have inserted the new impellor the other way not knowing about this tool!! And other conventional bearing type extractors that work?

Last point could not seal the speed seal cover!! The cover is a circular brass while the original is shaped allowing it to miss a hose and circlip. Ended up cutting (sawing & filing) speedseal cover on one side to the original Yanmar cover shape to miss the hose!

Why is nothing simple.

Yes I investigated Speedseal, but didn't like the sound of it. FWIW I just had two snapped bolts on the impeller, so decided to remove the entire pump and take home to repair - far far to fiddly in situ!! For the reasons you describe and for the speed of removing 4 bolts I didn't bother with a Speedseal, but I did purchase 4x additional bolts for the impeller cover as directly below my pump is a dark and narrow little void I would not want to be fishing in around in if I was in a hurry.

Re pulling the impeller, the thread you describe in the top of your new impeller will fit an M18 x 1.5 bolt. You can then either purchase a rinky-dink Yanmar extractor for £££, or do it my way - attach a mole grip to the M18 bolt and wiggle it out. No prizes for guessing my nationality :ambivalence:

Thanks may get a M18 bolt but not realising the significance of one side being threaded bet I fitted it wrong way for thread!
