Impellor blades installed wrongly. Trouble?

Decided to remove the impellor from my Yanmar 3GM30F this winter---just as well I did as the bolts holding on the water pump were seized solid and it took me hours to "persuade" them to come out. If I had suffered an imellor failure whilst at sea it would have virtually impossible to remove the pump to fit a new impellor.
So it's not just the impellor that you need to check, it's the ability to be able to remove the old one as well.

I keep a spare pump for my Yanmar 1GM10 'ready to go' rather than fiddle with an impellor in a seaway! Much easier.

I know a lot of people claim to do this but I remain to be convinced that it's actually easier to undo two hoses, three bolts, locate spare pump then refit the bolts and the hoses again. I find the main problem is not the impeller but the gasket - there are six possible orientations of which five are incorrect.... Speedseal is probably a good suggestion if you are worried about impeller failure. In my experience it's a relatively rare event.

1GM10 I fitted a speed seal which made changes very swift and simple.

3GM30F however is an entirely different nest of vipers, the speed seal would make little difference as, the pump is under the engine and the plate faces astern there is simply no way I can replace an impeller without first removing the pump.

That'll be what we call 'effing **** design' then?

If I had a set up like that, I would take the pump off, make a bracket, get a pulley and adapter if neccesary, and drive it from the fan belt - assuming that's accessible...

I had thought the same thing with my 3GM. In practice though the whole pump would be forward of the engine, so maybe 3-4 inches ahead of the crankshaft pulley. There just isn't sufficient space for it. The later Yanmars such as YM have the pump mounted the other way around.
