Trying to help a friend out....
He has a Yanmar 4LHA, not certain on what specific, but don't think it matters (It's a Dutch cruiser, on shaft)

What a silly place Yanmar placed the impeller! It's facing backwards, on the port side.

I could not get any pullers I had in my possession in there, nor a Knipex (which normally does the job). Can anyone link me to a pullers that will definitely fit in? Didn't even think to take a picture, d'oh! Hopefully this will make sense to those familar with Yanmar

(PS no issue with access, but IIRC it was the back of the starter that was restricting access)

Sometimes it's easier to remove the pump to change a reverse facing impeller.

From what I could see today, it's built into the block. I thought "That can't be", but then I had similar stories confirming my suspicion online.

It's a nightmare that's why I pay someone to do it. Often the best way is to take the pump off as has already been suggested. Apart from that one issue it's a a great engine I love my one on a stern drive

I could have been seeing things, but it looked to me that the housing was built into the block? Am I being delusional?? Someone else mentioned that 'their model' (there seems to be loads of variants of the 4LHA) is the same.

There are variations as with most things mine is a 240hp some are 230. They do change the letters so mine is a Z as it's connected to a stern drive

I don't know if the 4LHA uses a similar impeller to the one on my much smaller Yanmar but it might be worth checking. Simply look inside a replacement impeller to see if there is a threaded section. It might be worth making a puller if it does have a threaded section as this makes removal very easy and costs very little. I would use a wing nut instead of a slotted screw to make it even easier to use in awkward places.

I believe that Yanmar replacements might be threaded whilst other replacements are smooth sided.

I found this a problem as the design is 'pants' for getting to. There were 2 options:

1. Remove everything around to access the pump
2. Adapt puller (Jabsco) to get in to tight space - this is what I did from memory and replaced puller 'bolt' with normal bolt and at times a spacer - did the job- to get into the small space.

Many thanks.

I read online that if you use a genuine impeller, there is a thread inside it.

You can then make a pullers by getting a brass threaded blanking plate (to fit the impeller), drill a hole (and thread it) and then use a suitable bolt to screw the impeller out.

Any truth to it I wonder? If so i'd just get my friend to purchase genuine impellers and make him a pullers.

The engine is a 4LH-HTE.
