I need to change the impeller on my YSE12 Water pump. The manual, seems to indicate removing the pump and taking the whole pump assembly apart from the front. I have noticed that there is a cover plate on the back of the pump with six screws, can I just unscrew this plate and remove and replace the impeller that way?

Thanks

All water pump impellers are changed by removing those 6 screws and plate from the back of the pump. It is usually much easier to remove the pump and do this with the pump in your hands. You can also check the internal pump surfaces doing it this way, it should be quite easy to get the pump off.
About the only time its not convenient to remove the pump to change the impeller is when its not belt driven and mounted at the rear of the timing gear housing.

I agree. On YSM there are only a couple of bolts and a belt holding the pump on. Remove the whole pump, then you can see what you are doing.
If you don't want to remove hoses you can just twist it round without touching the hose connections.
It's really easy to lose the screws and you can't see how the impeller is fitted otherwise.

I was nervous about this until the forum advised me to remove it. I can reassure that it is literally a 5 minute job to remove the pump.

Make sure the inlet cock is turned off first!
