hi everyone,

I'd like to fit an immersion to our calorifier, but unsure of how to wire it. I have an MK garage consumer unit with 10 amp and 6 amp mcbs. (a radial plug socket circuit is on the 10a and the battery charger on the 6a).

Which mcb should I add the immersion heater to? We run a heater on the socket circuit so maybe the charger one is better? (apologies if this has been answered before - I did do a search but couldn't find anything)

thanks!

Toby

Depends on the rating of the immersion heater. The 6 amp would cope with
just over 1 KW .

Better to have Immersion on its own circuit breaker, but with only 2 available, I would put it on the 10 amp circuit. On 6 amp circuit will blow if charger decides to charge depleted batteries.

Are you SURE that you cannot add an extra MCB specifically for the immersion?....that would be by far the cleanest solution.

Many garage units that I've come across have enough room for an RCD + 3 standard MCBs. (you would probably need to remove a few knock-outs).

Edit: changed 'most' to 'many' after finding I have a spare one which can only accommodate 2 <frown>.

The simpler answer is if there is not room for another MCB is to buy the next size up enclosure and transfer your present parts and a new MCB to it.

What size cable is going to your consumer unit? and where does it come from?

Its no good adding extra demand and mcb's if you don't know the maximum supply,or cable size.

What size (kw) is the immersion?

be careful please you don't want a fire.
