I have a 2kw twin thermostat Immersion heater which could do with replacement. Any ideas for a supplier? Asap are the only ones who seem to have the type. Tried the original manufacturer but£165 for an Immersion heater is silly. Thanks

Do you have a make or you can get them made at heating element manufacture.

Yep
We get through immersion heaters about every 2 or 3 years.
I just use cheap domestic ones that I take out to the boat in Spain from the UK. Note - in my experience, Spanish immersion heaters are a different size to UK ones.
Also, our one is standard 3Kw. Not sure about 2Kw ones - maybe you can manage with a 3Kw one.

3kw is too much for a shore supply at our base plus the generator wouldn't run it. All standard immersion heaters are 3kw and around£15 but its the required twin thermostats which stop it tripping out when on engine heating that I'm looking for. Thanks

2kw ( and 1kw) available here

Immersion Heater - Backer Electric

I don't follow your need to have something complex to stop it heating when the engine is running.

If you are out you will most likely not have the gen running ( I do as I want the AC running in the med sometimes but I dont think this is that common on boats less than 70 ft - in which case the gen will easily run 3kw!!) and even if so the water will be hot and the immersion will hence such down as it has reached temp.

What happens is the the engine gets the water to hot and it trips the over temperature stat which works even if no electric to the element. It has the same effect on water heated by an aga on solid fuel , then we ha e to put a pipe stat on and make switch a pump on to circulate through heating

So there is the normal thermostat and also another general protection cut out that trips if it get very hot ?

I assume the thermostat Radiator valve that the boats I have had is there to stop just this ?
Yes ,there was an incident where the immersion kept heating up so the steam expands in to the cold water tank which are plastic it made the water tank to buckle and scalded a child in bed ,

Well on a hot water tank the expansion valves which open if water to hot , the stat temp should be set lower than that , we had it on our boat the valve as dripping causing the pump to come on for a split second drov us mad till we found it.

Make sure you get the right size in terms of length of element (not too long) and diameter of fitting through top of tank (I speak from bitter experience of trying to replace one the day before we started our voyage from Ramsgate to the Med).

Update. Midland Chandler's supplied me with the correct immersion heater, correct length, incaloy , twin thermostat, for£47 delivered the next day. They have also updated their description of these items to include the facts highlighted here. Most of not all Brooms have these and many others I'm sure. We do indeed have a TRV on the primary supply to the calorifier but, if that is not accurate, the overheat protection stat will stop the normal one from tripping out. Great help when the whole seating has to be removed for access.
