I'm thinking of organising

Re: I\'m thinking of organising

Get one of the instrument companies (Silva) to send up a technical guy to infomr your members how to properly calibrate and use all the features of their instruments.
sounds a bit techie and boring but if you have a decent audience, the duscussions on weather and boat performance can be really interesting. dispells a lot of myths about 35ft boats doing 8knots upwind and tacking through 60degrees.
Another suggestion would be someone like Martin Lawrence (he of the west coast pilot books) so that you can all have a go at him on where he got it wrong about the anchorages that you all love.
A lot depends on your club.
Alternatively, take a look at the most posted topics and have an evening each on:
Anchors
Anchoring techniques
(too much debate to do both in one evening)
Cleaning Teak
What to have in your tool box
How close to pass in front of a supertanker (Colregs and why 100,000tons of commercial enterprise should alter course for weekend hobbyists)
Racers and how antisocial they are

Clearly all these talks must be alcohol free, held in a hall with no heating and a leaky roof with unstable chairs..... all to give an authentic "at sea in a breeze" atmosphere

Re: I\'m thinking of organising

John Good (Sailing Today)gave a talk recently at the Solent MOA Laying Up supper- really entertaining & not afraid to say what he thinks. However, I get the feeling he only does a few local ones each year.

Thanks to all

For your responses and ideas
Much obliged - perhaps when I get a programme put together I'll post it here and you can come along if you want.

Re: Thanks to all

its always possible there's the twa orra youse but there's a gent sounding awfy like you contributing to the yacht club forum who harangued his fellow members by asking if any of them were awake .. nooo, if that's yer audience you might need more than just some old duffer showing slides of his cruise to morecambe bay last year with the wife doris, fido the dog and pussy the cat ....

could you not contrive some story such as you and muzzy turning up to do yer croupier lecture to a bunch of girls who realised this wasn't the lap/pole dancing tuition, they'd been directed to, during the practical demonstration?
