I\'m thinking of organising

A series of winter lectures at my Yacht Club.
I notice Tom Cunliffe charges around £200+ which doesn't sound too bad.
Anyone done this or been to a decent talk that you would recommend I include?
Thanks

Re: I\'m thinking of organising

I used to do a chat about the use of winter vegetables in the galley. Very popular. Charged £750 per 30 minute talk and had a 20 show tour.

I'd want to be paid more than £200 to listen to him. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But being serious, I've no direct experience of the man, but a colleague of mine gave her husband a weekend's sailing, and learning to use a sextant with TC on Westernman, as a birthday pressie. They had a good time and TC, though a bit dour on one or two subjects (particularly what had been done to Hirta by her new owner), was apparently excellent company.

Tom gave a talk at the Westerly Owners AGM a couple of years ago. Excellent speaker, amusing and down to earth. Other speaker at same event was Jake Kavanagh from PBO, again amusing, different from Tom C and oriented to canals.
Would happily listen to either again. More details on TCs website. www.tomcunliffe.com. Enjoy

Ian Clover gives a good talk on sailing across the pond with son Seb on the other Contessa 32. Haven't got a clue what he charged I'm afraid. His ad for instructing is often in the mag. classifieds.

'fraid I am, Discourse on the integration of parsley into the herbaceous border. First time I've touched on this exciting area so will be interested to see how it goes.

Haven't heard him myself, but I've been told that Pete Goss is very good.

tcm gives free lectures on last minute arrivals for cruises. All he requires are eggs and baked beans for breakfast.
Arrives with a police escort too...

Re: I\'m thinking of organising

Ladymacdonald & myself were at a seminar in Fortrose where TC was a speaker, he spoke for 1 1/2 hrs at the start of the seminar and again at the end, we found him very entertaining and fun. (just dont get him onto the subject of gaff rigged boats v other sail plans, somebody out of striking distance did and I could'nt find any thing to through at him).

After TC we got a wonderfull lass called Fiona (dare i say it) Campbell who talked all about the weather, and I think everyone learnt somthing from her, very good indeed. Her web site is www.skyeweather.com some very good links.

The other speaker was an expert in sail cloth design/materials, if i had a peice of rope handy I would have mastered the art of making a noose, then again if we were on the 3rd floor i could have jumped out of the window.

Would quite happily go and see old TC again.

We are talking about TopCat I hope. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: I\'m thinking of organising

Used to do this for a midlands cruising club (100miles from sea). In addition to Coastguard & RNLI, go for marine based companies - Insurance, Paints, Marina Operator, Sailmaker, Boatbuilder, GRP supplier, boat yard, Nav Software supplier, etc etc. Most will do a session free to help promote their product, but their people are usually good presenters (salesmen have to be) and will use a raft of funny stories to make their points. Almost all our visitors were entertaining and very informative.

You can then spread your expensive speakers over the year and mix in a few "home grown" members cruises, quizzes, bring & buys for variety. Ask your members who they would like to have & what they would like to know about. Hard work pulling it all together into a balanced programme (keep a few items on standby for the odd no-show) but very rewarding.

Adrian Flanagan

Went to a talk by him recently....most interesting I have been to for a long time...........2 hrs and i think he could talk forever, and his mission is not yet completed!
