I'm still 'ere

Re: I\'m still \'ere

Sensible decision I would say, get some kip and hope they get it sorted before the day boats want to go out or a lot of unhappy people are going to be kicking off

The tugs can't get out either, it's potentially quite dangerous I'd imagine. Good job the weather is ok. Mind you, I listened to the shipping forecast and it mentioned fog. Glad I didn't hear that when I was out there /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: I\'m still \'ere

Er, yes, fog and anywhere in the wash are not the best conditions to head in to. Missed the forecast here but I tend to try and work one out for myself after the trip where the CG said it would be no more than a 5 or 6 and others confirmed an 8. After yesterday though I would expect some fog out there until the breeze picks up in the morning.
What's the wind like there at the moment ?, if you're still online. Too far away here to tell much but I would guess flat calm with no wind at all

Re: I\'m still \'ere

Nathan,

That's exactly why I left LHM and moved to Shotley. I got so hacked off in the end trying to plan (or not) a day's boating around that damned bridge. It's a total mess. Bet you wished you'd gone through Breydon Water and out of GY now, eh ?

No. I still can't take the mast down on my own, so I would have bent it on one or two bridges. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: I\'m still \'ere

FFS!

The weather is all over the place again, with some easterly creeping in there.

http://www.windguru.com/int/index.php?sc=24118

At this point my lack of experience fails me, because I don't know what to do. Maybe get a job in the local Asda and wait until August when the weather might improve!!!!!

It might be worth turning around and going the other way. No, maybe not. I'd get stuck in the pub with Alan for another 2 weeks. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: I\'m still \'ere

and even if i did make it past alan, I've got round two of Jim. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Right, seriously, what do people think?

Sea Palling has been suggested, and I'm thinking this might be a good idea, but I'm worried about these easterlies.

Re: I\'m still \'ere

I'm getting well and truly effed off with this weather.

That bridge has really cocked it all up.

I don't know what to do now. I was going to leave tomorrow morning, in daylight, then take the 8 hours or so up to Sea Palling, drop the hook, then set off again on the ebb. However, Monday morning has thunder storms forecast, and I'm not putting to sea when I know that. Quite simply because I'm scared of them and I'm not doing it by choice.

So, can I get away with leaving tonight (early morning tomorrow) and resuming the plan I had yesterday? Everything is an hour forward now which puts HW Wells at about midnight. 2 hours before is, obviously, 2200, so, it's going to be dark still, and I'm not sure about getting in. If I stay out, I'm still left with thunder.

Damn this weather, damn that bridge, and damn my atrocious mooring effort back at RNSYC, where I left some stem paint on the pontoon. See, I told you I would when people are watching.

Re: I\'m still \'ere

Maybe I could do Sea Palling Tomorrow, leave the boat on the hook behind one of the sea defences during the thunder while I run ashore in my wetsuit on Condom, then sit it out ashore for the day, before resuming the day after.

Just thinking. Obviously not logically, but 3,000,000 volts does that to one.

Re: I\'m still \'ere

What's the rush? Thought you were going for the record of slowest round Britain sailor? If the weather is really worrying you, wait it out.

You may have a point, but I don't want to get myself a reputation here. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

This trip has, essentially baring a few years of in hindsight inconsequential day sailing, taught me to sail, or rather, taught me that I didn't know how to before hand. I think taking on a singlehanded Britain is biting off more than I can chew, but I will. My mouth may be full, I may be spitting bits out now and then, and it may put you off your dinner, but I will swallow this adventurous meal I've served myself.

That said, if an equally adventurous female wanted to share said dinner with me, then I think I would, without hesitation, drop the singlehanded caption from my title.

You already have one Nathan, and if you aren't very careful your eyesight will start to suffer! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

For goodness sake lad, if you need a wench, go and find one and have a few days off......the last thing you ought to be doing is setting yourself a timetable.

I think just about everyone is enjoying your adventures, I know I am, and if you don't make it all the way around, due to wench or weather, who's to mind, enjoy the day, because tomorrow will be along soon enough. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: I\'m still \'ere

If you speak to Bob the wells Hm before setting off he will come out in the launch and see you in(or his deputy will), he's a very nice helpful chap, the entry bouyage is lit quite well there, don't be tempted to shortcut the lead can bouy.

Re: I\'m still \'ere

Wells is a tricky night entry especially is there is heavy mist or rain,id aim for doing the coast in day light, there are a lot of crab pots between sheringham and cromer, after cromer they fade out.

I dont know if the HM or his assistant come out at midnight to guide you in,if they do then i would call in advance and ask,i have seen them guiding boats in late at night.

If you have to drop the hook,do it in Holkam bay,do not anchor close to any of the navigation bouys,i dropped the hook about 100 meters away from buoy No1 and when the tide turned the action was quite violent, not so in holkam bay.

i got caught out in fog about 5nm from wells,i backed tracked with my CP and honked my horn, once i got to the entrance it was no fog.

Sea Palling is okay for a stop in good weather,i would not want to be there in heavy onshore winds.

Take your time and pick your weather window, personally i would leave Lowestoft and get as far as i could up the coast in one hit, even if you are down to 1 knot your still heading up there,if HW is Midnight then you can enter at HW-2 following the HM,s launch.

My best time to Sea Palling from wells was just over 4 hours,i was hitting 8-9 knots Sog with the tide

Same place I did, same result. Don't suppose anyone does it twice. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: I\'m still \'ere

Personally speaking, I have never had a problem with the bridge at Lowestoft. There are fixed times for opening, and as long as you can tolerate these regular lifts then I cannot see a problem. Yarmouth is absolutly diabolical as far as bridge lifts ar concerned.
One time recently when I was approaching Shotley, the lock was broken for a while, S--t happens wherever, we just have to get on with it. I dont write off and degrade Shotley for a mechanical breakdown. But then I am north of the Orwell and there are Demons here.

What is not here is a roaring ebb tide, or flood tide, yes there is a rise and fall, but certainly not a full flow as in Yarmouth or Southwold. Would have been nice to have some sort of acknowledgement from the OP as he was directly opposite me yesterday, but hey ho. No Matter, Us from Lowestoft are used to being Ignored, Still trying to find the masses of commercial shipping that curtails boating activities here abouts, last time I was in Yarmouth,(Friday) there were 2 ships, Thursday was busy with 1. Lowestoft had 6, 4 of which were laid up.
I think I will go and talk to Malaprop, at least the lowestoft contingent wont be totally ignored then.
