I'm sold - a Junk rig for my girl!

Hi Tomski
I am in the process of converting my Elizabethan 29 to junk rig.
I looked at a Wing 25 along the way....nice boat.
Yes the mast does have to go forward and no your bermudan mast cannot be reused for junk. I sold my bermudian rig lock stock and sails and for now have a motorboat, until the new rig is finished. I have sailed junk and like the way they sail and the advantages for single handing, especially the lack of deck work on cold wet and windy nights on heaving slippery decks!
You can buy expensive bespoke mast from Needlespar, or you can do like I am doing and use an alloy lamp post instead. Mine is coming from Nedal in Holland, who also make bespoke yacht masts! The lamp post costs about £1k versus the bespoke mast at 3k.
The mast (lamp post) is conical and has a 177 lower diameter and 90 top. The wall thickness is 4mm and I am increasing this by inserting a 3m length of tube into the base which will give 8mm thickness from the keel step up.
In order to fit the new mast I am having to fill in the forehatch with several layers of ply/epoxy to make the partners ( a round hole through which the mast passes, then closed with wedges and a mast boot to keep the whole lot dry)
I have bought an acrylic sail (Hasler) from another junk rig boat which still has plenty of life left in it and am going for wooden battens.
I did look at a two master with a schooner rig, but decided on a sloop.
If I can be of any help, let me know.

Hello Jolly Sailor,
Thanks for the very useful information. The lamp post makes a lot of sense so will explore the options and find out if Nedal can help me also. Out of curiosity is that £1k plus shipment?

Also I'm guessing mast length is relative to the rig?

One of the chaps from jung rig group kindly offered to draw up a sail plan as he was looking at a wing also so I will have a sail plan which is fantastic. From there in addition to the mast I need to source sail and battens...then the actual rig itself right? Would appreciate any contacts you may have in obtaining these...thanks again :)

Hi Tomski
I might be able to help you with both a Hasler sail and battens, depending on the size of the sail that you require for your Wing 25. Best to PM me and I will also let you have the name in the UK of the Nedal agent.

Yeh, lampost sounds good but I would change the bulb to something less bright as it will effect your night vision.

Gitane I was wondering if your mast search came to anything? I'm looking for one myself...

I haven't got a mast yet because I am still unsure about the diameter and material etc. required.

A lot of Google searches and engineering equations seems to point towards an aluminium mast of 5.00 inch O/D and 0.25 inch wall thickness, but I am still not sure this is correct.

I am trying to find a way to contact Roger Taylor of Ming Ming. Ming Ming has about the same length and displacement of Gitane (a vivacity 650) so whatever Ming Ming has for a mast should be good enough for Gitane. (Ming Ming has done many long distance open ocean high latitude voyages).

Can anyone PM Roger Taylor's e-mail address so that I can ask him about Ming Ming's mast dimensions

With respect to sail area, Gitane has a displacement of around 2500lbs, add to that the weight of people and equipment and I come to a sail area of around 220 sq ft, which means that the mast needs to be about 32 ft heigh.

Gitane
