"I'm racing!" - how to reply

5 blasts on the horn.
Cheery wave.

Not always entirely effective.....

If I am somewhere like chichester harbour I would stay at anchour or on the mooring till sunday evening!

I was shouted at by a back marker for being anchored in his way, (we had been anchored for hours).
My response was " why don't you join in with the others then"

Must be good to have a wheelhouse. As the racers wave, whimpering their pathetic unjustified appeal to use your space, you raise your coffee, smile, nod and ignore...

What sour, miserable, self obsessed, awkward b*ggers some people are.

Isn't it considered merely good etiquette to keep out of the way of people racing? It was when I learned sailing. What's hard about that? Why do some people have to set out to be nasty?

Dear me...:|

+1. A good reply would by "no problem, have a nice day"

The worst arrogance problems we have had have been a port tack Norfolk Wherry on the broads and a 120ft British super yacht in Croatia - neither of which were racing but just size bullies

So yet again you find a racing fleet crossing your course. One of the back markers comes at you on Port while you are on Starboard. The inevitable cry of 'I'm racing' comes. How best to reply?

'I'm cruising'

'You're not very good at it are you'

'I did wonder but when you missed that last windshift I thought you couldn't be'

If any one from here is sailing in the Tamar this Sunday I'll be racing a little yellow boat with lots of sail from the Sound up to Cargreen, I'll be restricted in ability, then I'll be cruising back. With 20mph SE forecast I'll be not fully in command and with a 6' dagger board probably constrained by draft Once past the bridges. It's likely we'll be overtaking boat if we're up the right way.

Thing is, racers are good sailers aware of common and racing rules and usually well up to nimble tactics and always looking ahead and factoring in the changing variables
Mom and pop trundling downwind with undersized muscle, winches, choosing a angle that doesn't slop the tea, no Gybing coz it puts 'er in the shade and Ruffles the poodle gets upset at the crash bang.. There, there lies the Unstoppable Force sailing on at The Immutable Sailer ..

Can I ask? if actually at Anchor, are you (boat) not actually under command?

Cause if so you as Skipper can just raise a glass!

You might be NUC or you might not. But if you are anchored you are not under way and subject to displaying the correct lights or shapes have the same status in colregs as the town hall clock.
