I\'m off on My Hols too..

I finish tomorrow afternoon for my fortnights holiday/forums/images/icons/smile.gif.
We shall be going to the boat for the whole fortnight, Yes thats right you don't need a big cruiser gin palace to have long stays, our wee 25' cuddy is more than adequete for SWMBO, myself and Harry(our west highland terrier) to stay on, what with its galley sink pressurized water, gas stove, toilet and Ebersbecher heating, we're sorted/forums/images/icons/cool.gif.
Due to work comitments it has taken me 5 months to run it in (20hrs), so i am hoping to more than double that, and enjoy myself/forums/images/icons/wink.gif.

A bit of help is required right now though,/forums/images/icons/blush.gif
Its my wedding anniversary tomorrow, and don't know what to get SWMBO, HELP ME PLEASE....

Apart from that, unless i go and buy a decent phone tomorrow, i won't be able to keep up with all the goings on in this fantastic forum.
BTW is the P800 the only phone that i could log on with?

Anyway don't go killing yourselfs or Happy1. Enjoy your own sailing at the weekends.

Cheers....

Alistair...

Re: I\'m off on My Hols too..

You must have a huge amount of space on your boat.

We go out with me, SWMBO and 4 (four) kids aged 14, 11, 7 & 5 all on a 23 footer - No problems - just gota be organised and hope that it doesnt rain !!

Re: I\'m off on My Hols too..

The boats not Huge, as you say we just manage the space.

Back at the London boat show we looked at all the small cruisers e.g S23, Regal 2460 etc etc, but deceided we still wanted and could manage very well with a sportsboat, So you just make do.

But we have a bonus...............NO KIDS!!!!

Re: I\'m off on My Hols too..

Ahem after two weeks on boat there might be kids (no TV, see?)

You can log on with loads of phones. Connect to laptop. Or PDA thingy.

Re: I\'m off on My Hols too..

I only use a lap top at work not at home or boat...
Do PDA's work as phones.

Yes we have a Travel tv & DVD player/forums/images/icons/cool.gif.

Re: I\'m off on My Hols too..

There are some self contained pdas that take a simcard, bit low spec. The HP5450 is the business grade pda, it bluetooths to a mobile phone. I'm about to get one in the office, just awaiting delivery of a bluetooth phone, others here have them and surf the web in taxis and trains, seems to work well. Nice colour screen

sorry to hear your SWMBO will be taking the travel TV, dang :-)

Re: I\'m off on My Hols too..

There is one main integrated PDA called an XDA, it only operates with O2. I had one, well two of these and have just sold the new one to a forum member. The XDA was the best PDA I had, but unfortunately I commited myself to the new P800, and you know the rest of the story /forums/images/icons/wink.gif The P800 will do, just don't forget to use the Opera internet browser which comes on the CD supplied, NOT the in built one, or you will have HUGE data phone bills. Opera cuts out the images and other nonsense that would normally gobble up your MB download allowance, it stick to the basic text which is enough. If you really want to see a picture you can still log out and back in with the inbuilt one. Enjoy your boating, and new PDA.

Re: I\'m off on My Hols too..

Integrated Mobile/PDA...prices have to come way down soon, also loads of new ones coming soon into market based upon what I've just seen in US. Palm Tungsten will fit if you already use Palm. Only person I know to own XDA HATED it, what you expect from BT his view.

Re: I\'m off on My Hols too..

I think there is a difference between second hand info on why someone hated an XDA and someone like me who has used one, and could fully explain the pro's and con's. You don't explain what he hated about it which makes the sweeping statement 'that he hated it' a bit empty and unjustified. Don't worry I have tried most of them, so know the good and bad of the ones I have had, the XDA was my best though for size, quality, connectivity and ease of use with Windows CE. I couldn't get on with palm on the Clie or Ipaq and preferred windows CE, although I am now saddled with Symbian on the P800. I think you have missed Alistair as he is now on his hol's, but I know for a fact that he is up for the P800 as we have discussed it at great length, not that it is my favourite but everyone has different needs. So the only way to find out what suits you is to have a fiddle with them and ensure that it provides what you want, and that you can use and understand it, or it defeats the purpose.

I would also be interested to know which one you use, what operating system is on it, and how you get on with it, I am always on the lookout for new gadgets to try out.

Re: I\'m off on My Hols too..

I have a P800 too. Works great and yes, you really do need the Opera browser in it. It is quite a big program but it is fast and the small screen rendering works a treat. You can toggle the images on and off as desired without touching the built-in browser. It syncs perfectly with Outlook Express contacts too including phone numbers, multiple e-mails and addresses.

Much cheaper than buying a PDA and a data capable phone and means that you don't need 2 devices. Battery life is about 3-4 days normal usage, a lot less if you use the GPRS alot. You can add as many e-mail addresses as you want to the phone (I have 6 related to various websites I run). Touch screen is great and sound quality from headphones is phenomenial. got the Phone from onestopphoneshop.co.uk for £130 with contract in March

Good cruising

Re: I\'m off on My Hols too..

Mark, I have selected to remove the front key pad and use the virtual one, do you find that a lot of power is lost with the screen activating itself and coming to life with the slightest nudge, e.g in your shirt pocket. I also found that the numbers on the kep pad were fiddly, but so was the touch screen virtual keypad. I am getting a bit more used to it, but just find it bulky and less solid compared to the XDA, the screen is also smaller for viewing my word and excel docs.

End to the subject.

Why are you defending / pushing this company's products so agressively? What is your financial interest ? You protest too loud me thinks.

However to politely answer your points:

One person's view is as valid as any other. Everyone rates advice they receive against their own personal values, given that I know this individual well I rate his view and persomal assessment higher than yours because he is very well known to me. You have repeatedly stressed how your own 'research' is more valid than the experience of others on here. No problem. Each to their own.

His issues by the way were operability and product reliability, he loved the machine when he first had but after about 7 weeks the love affair ended.

For myself. I have owned 4 PDAS, 3 Palms ,( Pilot+ (?),V, and T/T) and an IPAQ. I am what you might call a serious business user but gave up with PDAs about 3 months ago due to increasing frustration with painful ( but admittedly occasional) i/face errors. Why? Now believe 1 Portable plus mobile plus note/book discipline is the way to go, and I travel frequently by anyone's standards. I really do not like the concept of using a PDA as my 'core' either. Fact of the matter is I am yet to meet a serious user who uses the full capability of PDAs on the move, and I can no longer be arsed with playing on the internet on the move. I will however keep looking when there is a SERIOUS reliable , seamless business PDA on the market but I am disillusioned with continual fads

Mobiles? A Nokia/Vodafone devotee for about 15 years albeit a little disappointed with my latest 8810 (??) not as rugged as old models. Also have a Sony for Frech local but hacks me off as its internal logic is different to Nokia. Not a product issue just my familiarity.

Respectfully suggest that this theme be left here as no interest on my part in any more discussion on the subject

Re: I\'m off on My Hols too..

There are lots of different options for pda/laptop connection - budget and functionality will dictate which is right for you.

Personally, I have both a laptop and an Ipaq PDA on the boat. Both use a PCMCIA card with a Vodafone GPRS card using a SIMcard I share between the two (but separate from my phone SIM). This works for me but is not the cheapest solution.

Several forumites use mobile solutions and have differing views on which is best.
GPRS is faster than GSM data and is charged on a data volume basis whereas GSM is based on call time whilst connected. I am not sure what the break even point is but GSM via Bluetooth or fixed cable will be cheaper for minimal usage, albeit painfully slow if you want to browse the web.

Re: End to the subject.

st to reply to your last question, and after this I also have no need to continue further :-

"Why are you defending / pushing this company's products so agressively? What is your financial interest ? You protest too loud me thinks"

I have no particular interest in it, I was only passing on my own personal feelings about it to Alistair, you came along without any 'personal' use of the said machine, although you have had others, and in capital letters said it was crap. Now I don't know why you said that or indeed felt the need to slag something off that you have never personaly used so strongly, so that was why I replied. There are only a couple of seemless products on the market, so that really limits it to the XDA, P800 and a couple of others, so I don't know what on earth you are on about. As you say everyone has their own opinions, but I would be guarded against coming out so strongly against a product like you did, when it was one I had personaly not had any experience of. My first oXDA lasted 18mths before being worn out without a hitch, I then got a new one, but was pushed by my mobile phone company to try the P800, I then ended up buying it and really regretting it, it is getting a bit better though, but as you say different systems take time to get the hang of. Out of interest you should look into the Blackberry, I am just about to get ten on trial, my wife uses one and loves it. I do believe that T-mobile have brought it into the domestic market, but don't know who sells it at the moment. Have a great weekend.
