I had thought we might be moving to Southampton and had some very good advice on here about living there but it's been confirmed this week that I have a job in Gosport starting in September so for various reasons involving access to schools/employment for the rest of the family it looks like it is going to be Portsmouth. Looking at living in the Cosham/Drayton area and commuting to work via the Gosport Ferry. So, kind people of this forum I could do with advice on where to live, where to find a friendly sailing club and/or crewing opportunities while we get to know the Solent and anything else you think a family new to Portsmouth needs to know. Kids are all teenagers and their sailing experience is confined to family flotillas in the med, but I'd like to encourage them to do some dinghy sailing. I have my Dazed Kipper and about 800 miles logged so hope to be a useful crew member and improve my skills. Thank you all for any opinions you might care to contribute!

Hi Nerrisa - welcome,

Portchester sailing cub (east Portchester) at the top of Portsmouth harbour, has a sailing club which I believe is very hands-on, suggest you look them up on a late Sunday morning - Sunday lunchtime is when they also have a very decent kitchen offering good grub + bar

Wicormarine (west Portchester) where my boat is kept, is a boatyard with lots of people working on their boats weekends and boats on moorings in the summer - perhaps drop in there too to see what you can find out about crewing etc..

I provides you with a viewpoint on taxation though, for those of you who think that NH is bad or is not as excellent at it seems. My spouse and I reside in a home on Lengthy Isle. Homes are costly here to start with, but our taxation are relatively affordable for LI requirements at $9600. Across the road is a different city and theirs are about 3-4K greater per home. It varies per city quite considerably.

Providing community aged care supported living housing in Toowoomba, the Glenvale Villas are the perfect option for your loved ones, if they need a little extra help with daily living.

I have no idea what this is doing here - reported to Mods.

I'll remember not to mention it. Anyway, I have to go where the work is, but I am glad it is taking me to Portsmouth.
Thanks Scotty and Sandyman for the tips re Portchester, I have checked out their website and it looks good.

There is a club,Tudor sailing club,at the top nw corner ,of Langstone Harbour ,don't know much about it though.I am based in Southsea Marina...so if you need any local knowledge..give me a shout.

Cosham or Drayton are not bad places but, if you're working in Gosport, then why not consider Alverstoke or Lee-on-Solent? Travel into Gosport may be easier. SWMBO lived in Gosport years ago & I remember the A35 at rush hour - horrible. If you live east then the ferry is really the only option. But, you still have to get to the ferry. If you do live in Cosham or Drayton & use the ferry, you will need to take the train to the Hard. Don't consider using a car. Parking close to the Hard isn't that good & it can take for ever to get in & out of the city at rush hour. Parking close to Cosham station isn't that good either so it would be good to be close to the station.

For dinghy sailing Stokes Bay SC is reasonable. I was a member there years ago. There's no tidal restriction which can be a problem in some of the clubs in the harbours.

I think If I was moving that way to work in Gosport i would live to the west of it somewhere if I was intending, or able, to drive to work. Somewhere towards Southampton ???

The road from Fareham to Gosport ( A32 ) is truly dreadful at times. My last time along there was a Sunday afternoon, and not in summertime either, took forever to get back to Fareham

I imagine A32 was what Wooslehunter meant as the A35 is not in that area

I recruit locally and while I don't want to cause offence, the schools from Fareham west seem to deliver more qualifications.

I moved from Stoke area to Gosport for work but when it came to settling down with family moved out to Eastleigh area.

I don't know where you are based, but unemployment in this area is nothing like what it is elsewhere. So, pick a home that gives you easy access to the moterway (that does not mean in Gosport) so you can choose to work from Winchester, Southampton, Portsmouth and Chichester and you will have the pick of the good jobs.

PM me if you want any school advice.

Totally agree with others here.
We live in the area mentioned (north east of Portsmouth) but if I had regular work in Gosport it would not be my first choice.
Farlington & Drayton are good areas as they are catchment for Springfields school - (probably) the best comp in Portsmouth area. But, that said, Fareham area in Cams Hill catchment, would give a good compromise as you would have nice residential surroundings, good school & close to Fareham/Portchester/Gosport sailing clubs (Portchester, by experience, would be my first choice of club - with family considerations). The downside would be work travelling but still very do-able from this area.

Other option would be Alverstoke or Lee-on-Solent. I believe that Bay house is a reasonable school.

Good luck and best wishes

As a teenager I lived in Drayton/Farlington and also in Hillhead to the West of Gosport. The Hillhead/Stubbington/ Lee-on-the-Solent area is far better positioned for both Gosport commute (10 mins) and access to Watersports. Stubbington and Hillhead also have 3 viable access routes in, so none of the traffic problems of Gosport itself.

Alverstoke is nice and Bay House is a good school, but harder to get to than Gosport as you effectively have to go through Gosport.

For a teenager, Drayton/Farlington just didn't offer anything, so was often getting the bus into Portsmouth. Once in Hillhead, I became a keen windsurfer and could walk to the beach.

For work in Gosport, I would definitely look at living west (Alverstoke, Lee or Stubbington/Hill Head). Sailing clubs include Stokes Bay, Lee, Seafarers, and Hill Head. I have lived in Head Head or Stubbington for nearly 25 years and whilst we dont have kids back in the early days the Crofton Schools were scoring highly for being local catchment and educational standards.
