I\'m looking for a 12v plug & socket

I'm looking for a 12v plug and socket, similar to the shore support cable extension plug and sockets but different so it never gets confused. I see loads of deck mounted stuff but not 'free' extension types. Incidently it's for a inflatable air pump which takes quite a lot of current (ie the wires are quite thick)

Re: I\'m looking for a 12v plug & socket

My dinghy inflator pump instructions specifically state that the crocodile clips must be connected directly to battery terminals, as because you said , the current draw is high!

Re: I\'m looking for a 12v plug & socket

What is wrong with a 12 volt socket and a long lead on your pump? That is what I use and have no problems.

Re: I\'m looking for a 12v plug & socket

Hi Jim
The 3m lead is a little too short to reach to the best place to pump up the tender on the boat. My 'green' pump has just died after 15 years so I want to connect my new 'green' pump to the existing lead to give me lots of reach. I don't want a permanent connection hence the plug and socket requirement.
[If you've never seen a 'green' pump you will wonder what I'm on about....they are the best by far]

Re: I\'m looking for a 12v plug & socket

Although the instructions do state that the inflator must be connected to the battery with the crocodile clips, I have used an LVM inflator connected to the electrical system using a 'dri-plug' plug & socket, for several years without any problem.

Certainly it is important that the cable run is of adequate size, but as the inflator is unlikely to be used for more than a couple of minutes at a time, the plug and socket did not appear to suffer any adverse effects.

I have a desent 12v plug and socket on my boat. But have never found other plugs to fit. Everything these days seem to be fag lighter types. Even have two of them (waterproofed) on fly bridge. So got one socket. One plug, fitted to famous fuel transfer pump but dont fit nowt else!! Why is there no standard 12V plug/socket /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: I\'m looking for a 12v plug & socket

Caravans/Campervans use a 12V plug and socket system, visit your local caravanny place. The plugs probably don't like passing 10A for long periods, but seem ok with my 12V kettle. The pins are angled / \ so they only plug in one way round. Not waterproof for deck use though. Failing that if current draw/cable size is an issue then standard domestic 2 pin plug and socket will pass all the current you are likely to want.

Re: I\'m looking for a 12v plug & socket

I have a 12 volt socket in a locker ( might be dri-socket? ) that you can buy in a chandelery. I have then just extended the lead on the pump so I can reach the pontoon or bathing paltform.

Re: I\'m looking for a 12v plug & socket

we use the small 3 pin (round pin) type. similar to the old fashion pre square 240 volt pins.

Re: I\'m looking for a 12v plug & socket

Probably some chandlers, but I admit, I have not seen many recently!

Have just done a Google search for 'dri-plug' and it has returned a number of sites from chandlers to online shops.

Alternatively, if you don't mind waiting until the weekend, if I have a plug & socket that are surplus to requirements, you are welcome to have them. Can't promise, but I'll pm you either way.

David.
